"Variety is the spice of life and Gay Power is by and for all people." - Gay Power's mission statement. New York City's first post-Stonewall gay newspaper, had a brief run covering the city's gay culture and politics. "During its run of 24 issues, Gay Power was known for its striking covers with psychedelic art and contemporary photography, including one by Robert Mapplethorpe, current accounts of gay activism, sexual photographs and drawings, and regular columns by such contributors as Arthur Bell, Charles Ludlam, Pudgy Roberts, Bill Vehr, Pat Maxwell, and Clayton Cole. Writer, actor, and performer Taylor Mead wrote a total of 15 columns for the publication. It also included columns by New York-based activist groups, such as the Mattachine Society and the newly formed Gay Liberation Front, and illustrations by Touka Laaksonen, better known as Tom of Finland." - NYC LGBTQ Historic Sites Project.

Añadir al carritoSoftcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Pioneering gay newspaper published in the aftermath of the Stonewall Riot. "First of all we must approach the subject from within. Whatever examples of gay power have been demonstrated thus far, whether it be through straight media or on the part of homosexuals themselves--it's either met with some kind of legal or ignorant interference or too one-sided a picture has been presented. Variety is the spice of life and Gay Power is by and for all people. A people is what we shall exemplify first not in any 'half see how far we can get' subtle way, but in the best entertaining and educational way". Content include "Astrology," by Walter Breen; "Return to (Non-Piss-- Unless It's Your Thing) Elegance," by Clayton Cole; "The Caterpillar Who Made IT," by Taylor Mead; "Ave atque Vale," illustration by Aubrey Beardsley; "Pornographic Poem," by John Giorno. Tabloid format. Has been stored folded. toning to edges. center of fold has a puncture/tear and slight moisture damage. Could use some archival treatment and careful pressing (but I will leave that to more highly skilled hands). No AMA 24 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 2-3 Pounds. Category: Gay & Lesbian Studies; Inventory No: 030954.
