Heusken kept his journal from October 25, 1855, when he sailed from New York, until shortly before his assassination by Japanese extremists. Because of his facility in several languages and his sensitivity to Japanese customs, Heusken became a useful and popular member of the foreign community. His accounts of events as Japan prepared to end its isolation, to open the country to trade with the West, is both fresh and rewarding in itself and a valuable compliment to the writings of Commodore Perry and Townsent Harris" (jacket blurb).
