August 1987 verstarb Rudolf Heß, der ehemalige Reichsminister und Stellvertreter Adolf Hitlers, im alliierten Militärgefängnis Berlin- Spandau unter mysteriösen und bis heute ungeklärten Umständen. Alle bisher ans Tageslicht gekommenen Indizien deuten darauf hin, daß Heß von zwei Männern im Auftrag britischer Regierungsstellen ums Leben gebracht wurde. Die westlichen Alliierten hatten zwar offiziell immer der Freilassung von Rudolf Heß zugestimmt, doch war das Veto der UdSSR in den letzten Jahrzehnten eine voraussehbare Selbstverständlichkeit. Als sich dies unter Gorbatschow änderte, sah die britische Regierung, welche die Akten über den Fall Heß bis zum Jahr 2017 (!) vorsorglich geheimhält, plötzlich bestürzt die Möglichkeit, daß nach seiner Entlassung uneingeschränkt über die politischen Ereignisse der Jahre 1940/41, die im Flug von Rudolf Heß nach Schottland am 10. 5. 1941 gipfelten, hätte sprechen können. Die Aussagen des Kronzeugen jener Vorgänge hätten zweifellos endgültig bewiesen, was namhafte Historiker wie John Charmley schon lange behaupten: daß der europäische Krieg, bevor er sich zum grausamen Weltkrieg weitete, schon im Frühjahr 1941 hätte beendet werden können, was das Leben unzähliger Menschen gerettet und auch das Britische Empire vor seinem Niedergang bewahrt hätte. Doch Churchill, der es unter Drängen des amerikanischen Präsidenten Roosevelt vorzog, den Teufel mit dem Beelzebub auszutreiben, und vom Ziel der Vernichtung Deutschlands nicht abrücken wollte, lieferte damit nicht nur ganz Ost- und Ostmitteleuropa an Stalin aus, sondern zerstörte auch das eigene Weltreich. Während sich der eine Teil des Buches mit dem Nachweis und der Rekonstruktion des Mordes an Rudolf Heß befasst und dabei sensationelles Fotomaterial von der Obduktion vorlegt, befasst sich der andere mit den historischen Implikationen der Ereignisse rund um Heß Englandflug unter Verwendung der neusten wissenschaftlichen Literatur. Aber wer bloß eine Darstellung des Lebens jenes Mannes sucht, der 46 seiner 93 Lebensjahre in Einzelhaft verbracht hat, wird mit diesem Buch zufriedengestellt.
