No inscriptions or bookplate. An unusual edition, not listed by British Library as far as we can see. Binding weak, virtually disbound.

B. Hervey, supplemented with literary extracts from Longfellow, Lowell, Bryant, Emerson, & other popular writers of the day. Orig. containing color lithographs of the flowers described within, these are ALL MISSING (price significantly reduced accordingly), but the textual information & the lovely decorative exterior remain intact! A FIRST EDITION, First Printing, from 1882, this large quarto (10" x 12.5") has deep tan cloth-covered boards stamped with a brilliantly colored red/black/gilt design & lettering to front board, faded gilt design & lettering to spine. Condition is VG: quite clean with the occasional spot of smudge, scattered soiled spots to both boards. Second free endpaper & pages 22-23 are tearing loose, but still barely attached; all other pages securely stitched & binding is strong & straight, both hinges secure. Bright gilt to all exterior page edges, interior pages are creamy white & unmarked. Exterior shows rubbing to extremities & bumping to corners, with mild cloth loss at both ends of spine, all corners, & a few places along fore edge side of front board. State of eps suggest book has been stood in water at some point as up to 1" damp marking around edges. Foxing spots to both sides of frontis, declining over first half dozen pages leaving rest of book mainly clean and firm. 464pps then a list of bible texts referenced, plates and Kelly's ad. All five plates affected by foxing spots and have tanned the facing pages. Some text pages also tanned.

Some page corners dog-eared. Top edge of page 65 of Hamond and Hervey has had the top piece cut off.
