The book has some light foxing throughout. The boards have heavy edge wear especially the head and foot of the spine. "8vo., (9 x 5 4/8 inches). Folding lithographed map: " of the Valley of the Amazon " by H.C. Elliott, with original hand-colour in part (some tears with occasional loss at folds), 16 tinted lithographed plates (some spotting and marginal staining throughout). Original black cloth, gilt (extremities worn with loss). Provenance: with the engraved armorial bookplate and penciled ownership inscription of Walter R. T. Jones on the front free endpaper. Reprint of the official report first published as House Executive Document 53, for the 33d Congress, 1st Session. Lieutenants Herndon and Gibbon were dispatched in 1851 on an exploration of the Amazon River. The expedition started from Peru and Herndon made a very complete survey of the main branch of the Amazon system. Gibbon's account and an Atlas volume, not present here, were published simultaneously. "The citizens of the United States are, of all foreign people, most interested in the free navigation of the Amazon. We, as in comparison with other foreigners, would reap the lion's share of the advantages to be derived from it. We would fear no competition. Our geographical position, the winds of Heaven, and the currents of the ocean, are our potential auxiliaries. Thanks to Maury's investigations of the winds and currents, we know that a chip flung into the sea at the mouth of the Amazon will float close by Cape Hatteras. We know that ships sailing from the mouth of the Amazon, for whatever port of the world are forced to our very doors by the SE, and NE, trade winds; that New York is the half-way house between Para and Europe" (Page 371). Herndon was the brother-in-law of Matthew Maury, and his daughter was later to marry Chester A. Arthur, who succeeded Pierce in the White House in 1881, after the assassination of James A. Garfield. Herndon died in 1857; he was the captain of the "Central America", a steamer carrying mail, gold from California, and about 675 passengers and crew, which encountered a gale off Cape Hatteras during a trip from Colon to New York. The ship lost its rigging, leaking water flooded the engines, and all the women and children aboard were transferred to the brig "Marine" before the seas claimed Herndon's ship along with her captain and several hundred passengers and crew.".
