Im August des Jahres 1726 spielte sich eines Abends in London ein mysteriöser Vorfall ab: Eine Droschke erschien aus dem Dunkel der Nacht vor dem Haus des Verlegers Benjamin Motte Jr., eine unbekannte Hand warf ein Päckchen, das ein Manuskript enthielt, aus dem Fenster vor Mottes Tür, die Droschke verschwand so schnell, wie sie gekommen war. Das Manuskript wurde am 28. Oktober des gleichen Jahres anonym unter dem Titel Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World ( Reisen zu mehreren entlegenen Völkern der Welt ), mit sensationellem Erfolg veröffentlicht. Heute ist es ein Buch der Weltliteratur. Der Verfasser des Buchs war, wie sich schnell herumsprach, der schon beinahe sechzigjährige Dekan der Kathedrale des Heiligen Patrick in Dublin, Jonathan Swift, seines Zeichens Doktor der Theologie. Vier phantastische Reisen unternimmt Lemuel Gulliver, der erst Schiffsarzt ist und später Kapitän wird. Die erste führt ihn nach Lilliput, die zweite nach Brobdingnag, ins Land der Riesen, die dritte unter anderem auf die schwebende Insel Laputa und nach Glubbdubdrib, der Insel der Zauberer, die vierte schließlich ins Land der Houyhnhnms, vernunftbegabter, weiser Pferde, die weder Krankheit noch Krieg kennen und sich als Haus- und Lasttiere die menschenähnlichen Yahoos halten. Swifts beißende Satire auf die gesellschaftlichen und politischen Verhältnisse seiner Zeit hat auch als Jugendbuch Karriere gemacht und existiert in zahlreichen Bearbeitungen.
