The Introduction (by Borchardt) and Index to the Pictures are written in English, while all of the captions to the illustrations appear in 4 languages. This volume describes the 1961 archaeological expedition to Egypt, and records the discoveries from the cemeteries and settlements around Bab Kalabsha, including the architecture of the sacred complex of late Roman times on the heights above Bab Kalabsha, a small valley chapel at Taifa, Christian remains from settlements on the island of Darmus, and refuge-shelters erected on the high desert. The discovery of two cemeteries with distinctive remains dated to the middle of the fourth century A.D., roughly contemporary with the desert refuges, highlight the excavations. Large domical stone tumuli with high stone enclosures are attributed to Blemmye rulers of the area who were a major force in the political upheaval of Late Roman Egypt. This work is complete with its 30 full-page plates. Corners rubbed. Moderate shelf wear. Covers slightly soiled. Text in German and English. Binding in overall fair to good, interior in very good condition.

WenteThe Temple of Beit el-Wali is a rock-cut Ancient Egyptian temple in Nubia which was built by Pharaoh Ramesses II and dedicated to the deities of Amun-Re, Re-Horakhti, Khnum and Anuket. It was the first in a series of temples built by Ramesses II in this region; its name Beit el-Wali means 'House of the Holy Man' and may indicate its previous use by a Christian hermit at some point in time. In an amazing feat of salvage archaeology, the temple was cut up and relocated--then reassembled on higher ground--during the 1960s as a result of the flooding to be caused by the Egyptian Aswan High Dam project. The book and plates come in a presentation case. The condition of the book and plates are good and the pages are clean. The bottom margin of the presentation case is loose, and there are a few stains on the board.
