About The Book: "The People of India" by Herbert Hope Risley and William Crooke is a foundational ethnographic work documenting the diverse tribes, castes, and communities of British India. Based on extensive fieldwork and anthropometric studies, the book classifies Indian populations by physical traits, social structures, and customs. While significant for its detail and scope, it reflects colonial ideologies and now-outdated racial theories. Despite criticisms, it remains a crucial historical source for understanding colonial perspectives on Indian society and early anthropological methods in South Asia. About The Author: Sir Herbert Hope Risley (18511911) was a British ethnographer and colonial administrator in India. As Census Commissioner, he classified Indian castes and races using anthropometry, promoting scientific racism. He also led key ethnographic studies in Bengal. About The Author: William Crooke (18481923) was a British orientalist and civil servant in India, known for documenting Indian folklore, religion, and caste systems. He edited North Indian Notes and Queries, and authored key ethnographic works, promoting contemporary cultural studies.
