Il résulte de tout cela que les connaissances sur le folklore de ce groupe sont presque entièrement limitées aux notes de ceux qui y vécurent il y a un siècle et plus. Il faut rendre hommage aux anciens navigateurs et à ceux qui les accompagnèrent ; leurs récits sont tout ce qu'on pouvait en espérer. Un hommage plus grand encore est probablement dû aux premiers Missionnaires dans le genre de Nott, William Ellis, qui utilisèrent avec profit cette occasion unique qui leur était offerte. Mais celui qui cherche à reconstituer dans ses grandes lignes la vie de cet homme remarquable, grâce à un manuscrit du révérend J. M. orsmond écrit en 1849 et actuellement en ma possession, et grâce aussi à des renseignements donnés par ses descendants.
