Hardcover. Condición: New. Czech poet and photographer Jindrich Heisler (1914â"1953) joined the Czech Surrealist Group in 1938, just as Nazi occupation of the country was driving the movement and Czech artists underground. Heisler published his first book of poetry a year later. In his brief and courageous careerâ"Heisler died suddenly at the age of thirty-eightâ"he produced some of the most remarkable assemblage work of the Surrealist movement, including what is arguably the single-most important photobook produced in the 20th century, From the Strongholds of Sleep (1940-41).This gorgeously illustrated volumeâ"with eighty color images of Heisler's assemblage piecesâ"introduces English-speaking audiences to his work, translating many of his writings for the first time and offering in-depth analysis of his postwar years in Paris in the company of Andrà Breton, Benjamin Pà ret, the illustrator Toyen, and other major figures of the Surrealist movement.…

Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Sm.8° - 104pp - One tipped-in color plates and B/w reproductions. TOYEN (Marie Cerminova 1902-1980) Czech Surrealist painter. A sexually ambiguous character, Toyen spoke only in the masculine gender , according to her Devetsil peer Jaroslav Seifert. So too, Toyen wore both male and female clothing and explored sexual imagery in the artwork. This disruption of sexual norms and representations of the body emphasises Toyen s role as a Surrealist, as these depictions of the human form encompass erotic desire, comedy, tragedy, and political subversion. Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo 21.2x15 cm., wrappers, 64 pp. Cover and book design by Karel Teige. This is the first trade edition. A surrealist book against war and a call to resistance to tyranny. The book was clandestinely self-published in 1941 in very small numbers under 20 and distributed underground by Edice Surrealismu. The work combines the poetry of Jindřich Heisler (1914-1953) , hiding secretly in Toyen's apartment during several years of the German occupation with photographs taken by Štyrský in Paris and Prague from 1934 to 1935. Cheap and discarded objects delve into morbidity and decay, where desintegration and death prefigure new life. Heisler's long poem is a mediation on the endurance and declaration of faith. Together they offer a paeon in impossible times to hope and resistance. This is Jindřich Štyrský's last publication prior to his early death in 1942 and assembled by him in full knowledge of his impending end. The book is dedicated to Toyen. 1500.
