Rare complete first edition set of volumes I & II in original wrappers. 1958 date at title pages. Copyright 1958 by The Twentieth Century Fund. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Dust wrappers, moderate rub, edge wear, chip; unclipped 10.00, protected in new clear sleeves. Rare sharp two volume set. Includes introduction to antitrust law and theory with an examination of major industries and their anti-monopolitistic cases. Features over one hundred tables and charts demonstrating the big players and their production. These volumes elucidate twenty American monopolies and the cutthroat tactics and actions utilized since being first busted in the late nineteenth century. Monopolies prevent healthy competition, free enterprise and are not of benefit for consumer or client. They produce less innovation and quality, higher prices, and less inclination toward responsible practices. It is, in a sense, the greatest form of hoarding. This study is presented from a perspective of the mid-20th century and offers a prognosis for limiting these activities in the future. Contents: "Volume I: 1. Introduction; Major Industries; 2. Meat Packing; 3. Petroleum; 4. Chemical Manafactures; 5. Steel; 6. Paper; 7. Bituminous Coal; 8. Automobiles; 9. Cotton Textiles. Volume II: 10. Cast Iron Pipe; 11. Tobacco Products; 12. Anthracite; 13. Aluminum; 14. Shoe Machinery; 15. Motion Pictures; 16. Tin Cans; 17. Farm Machinery; 18. Corn Refining; 19. Cement; 20. Pullman Cars; 21. Insurances; The Summing Up: 22. Summary of Case Studies; 23. The Antitrust Laws in Perspective; 24. Report of the Committee; Appendix. Critiques of the Case Studies; Table of Cases; and an Index." The first attept at corralling these activities, was the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890 which became law while Theodore Roosevelt was serving on the U.S. Civil Service Commission. When Roosevelt's first administration sought to end business monopolies, it used the Sherman Anti-Trust Act. Passed after a series of corporate mergers during the 1880s, this Act enabled government and private individuals to use the courts to break up any organization or contract alleged to be in restraint of trade. The federal government used the Act to invalidate formal and informal arrangements. In 1902, President Roosevelt urged his Justice Department to dismantle the Northern Securities Corporation - a holding company or a combination of separate railroads administered by a Board of Trustees. At issue was its control of railroading in the northern tier of the United States from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest. After losing in the lower courts, Northern Security trustees appealed to the Supreme Court, which ruled 5-4 in March 1904 that the Northern Securities Corporation violated the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the first major example of trust-busting during Roosevelt's presidency. From front flap: "To a degree and almost unique in the modern world, Americans are united in support of two foundational beliefs - the value of competition in business and need for preservation and enforcement of this. Central to this are our antitrust laws - the original Sherman Acut of 1890 with Teddy Roosevelt's involvement, the Clayton, Robinson-Patman Act and others with policies which have been added. Presented here by author Simon N. Whitney, is an incisive, impartial and authoritative survey, industry-by-industry of what has actually happened in twenty fields. Included are memorable and precedent-setting cases as the dissolution of the Standard Oil and American Tobacco Companies in 1911; the consent decree in the meat packing industry in 1920; the 'divorcement' decree in the motion picture industry in 1948; et al. The record in twenty industries is clearly examined and explained in an accessible and direct style for expert and layman alike. Simon Whitney's study concludes with a policy statement by The Twentieth Century Fund's Committee on Antitrust Policy." The Twentieth Century Fund [The Century Fund] is a foundation which conducts research and public education on economic problems. Founded in 1919 and endowed by Edward A. Filene, the Fund is devoted to its own research and education. This extensive two volume study was written by Simon N. Whitney, Chief of the Research Department at Twentieth Century Fund and Professor of Economics at New York University. He later became Chief Economist and Director at the Federal Trade Commission. Printed in the United States of America by Wm. F. Fell Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 560 & 541 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Book.…
