Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: As New. Reprint. Hardcover facsimile edition in grey cloth, no dust jacket as issued, 53pp. Luther #31. Dowd #445. O'Keefe #1073. As New - appears unread/unopened. This is General Hazen's critical response to George Custer's over-enthusiastic report of the Northern Pacific Railroad country observed during the latter's 1873 Yellowstone Expedition. A bitter controversy developed between Hazen and Custer over this land, and the publication of this pamphlet was a part of the feud. Hazen wrote that the land was arid and worthless while Custer responded with descriptions of its great beauty and potential. In the end, as shown today, Custer was right. The pamphlet was published in 1875 and is rare today and expensive. Here is an opportunity to own a facsimile of the original publication. Hazen and Custer had a long history going back to when Custer was a cadet at West Point and Hazen was an artillery instructor.…

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a fascinating chapter of history: the use of homing pigeons for military purposes. The author, drawing on historical accounts and personal observations, explores the complex origins of this practice, tracing its use from ancient times to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The book examines how these birds were employed as vital messengers, their ability to navigate across vast distances relied upon by emperors, revolutionaries, and even financiers seeking a competitive edge. The author examines the long-standing debate over whether a pigeonââ â¢s homing ability is rooted in instinct, training, or a combination of both, delving into theories that attribute their incredible navigation to atmospheric influences or even electrical currents. This book not only illuminates the history of using pigeons for communication but also raises profound questions about the nature of intelligence, instinct, and the limits of human understanding. Through a blend of historical analysis and scientific inquiry, the author presents a compelling case for the pigeonââ â¢s role as a vital historical figure in its own right, a creature that has defied human understanding while serving as a key player in pivotal moments in history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
