Soft Covers. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Second Printing. This "Pictorial Account of the Kauri Timber Industry in New Zealand" is a comapion volume to Bruce Hawyard's study of the Kauri Gum industry. The Kauri timber was an early economic discovery by seafarers in the late 1700s and early 1800s, when the younger trees were prized for use as spars. Confined to the northern third of the North Island the Kauri was soon recognised by early settlers as an excellent timber for dwellings and other strutures. Quickly an important idustry develped around the Kauri forests. Originally covering 1.2 million hectares, this area had been reduced by 75per cent by the late 1800s and today only 4000 hectares remain of these majestic giants of the forest, mostly in protected parks and reserves. Mainly pictorial, with extended captions telling the story of the Kauri industry, the feature of the booklet is its excellent collection of contemporary photographys. Part of a "Pictures from the Past" series, it was first published 1991, with this second printing 1994. 48 pages, b/w photos throughout, sketches, map showing the area where the Kauri flourished. Pictorial card covers VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Photos, Sketches , Map (ilustrador).…

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. This copy feels unread. "Granite and Marble: A Guide to Building Stones in New Zealand" explains how different types of stone are formed, used, and valued in New Zealand construction, with a focus on clarity and practical detail. The book introduces the three main rock types—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic—and explains how each contributes to New Zealand's building heritage. Granite, for example, is an igneous rock formed deep underground from slowly cooled magma. It's made mostly of quartz and feldspar, which gives it strength and a speckled appearance. Marble, on the other hand, is a metamorphic rock created when limestone is subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. This process causes the minerals to recrystallize, forming the smooth, veined patterns that make marble so popular for decorative use.…

Soft cover. Condición: VG+. No Jacket. Third. For New Zealand, from the 1870s to the 1930s, the recovery and export of Kauri gum was an important contributor to the country's economy, At the height of the industry, around 1900, an estimated 20,000 people were engaged on the gumfields, with half working full-time. In the 100 years from 1850 gum valued at 25million pounds was exported, the total weight being 450,000 tons and for the first 50 years it was the Auckland province's most valuable export, ahead of kauri timber, gold and wool. Hayward's book tells the story of this trade, those who worked in it, how they lived and the uses for the gum. This is mainly contained in the extended captions to the dozens of excellent historic photographs used to illustrate the booklet, which is part of the Bush Press "Pictures From the Past" series. First published 1982, re-set new edition1989 with this reprint 1994. 48 pages, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, up to three on some pages, map showing gumfield locations and graph indicating gum production trends. Illustrated card covers VG+, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Photos, Map (ilustrador).…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Volcanoes of Auckland is a handy field guide to the fiery natural world that so deeply shapes New Zealand's largest city - from Rangitoto to One Tree Hill, Lake Pupuke to Orakei Basin. For tens of thousands of years, volcanoes have profoundly shaped the area's geology and geography. And for hundreds of years, volcanoes have played a key part in the lives of Maori and Pakeha - as sites for pa, kumara gardens or twentieth-century military fortifications, as sources of stone and water, and now as parks and reserves for all to enjoy. In a new format designed for the backpack (and including three newly recognised craters), the field guide features: * an accessible introduction to the science of eruptions, including dating and the next eruption * a history of Maori and Pakeha uses of the volcanoes * an illustrated guide to each of Auckland's 53 volcanoes, including where to go and what to do * aerial photography, maps and historic photographs - over 400 illustrations, 80% of them new. This field guide will help readers engage afresh with the history, geography and geology of Auckland's unique volcanic landscape. How many volcanoes are there? When did they erupt and how do we know? Will there be another eruption in Auckland and, if so, where and when? Will we have sufficient warning to evacuate in time? What is a lava cave, a volcanic bomb or a tuff ring? Why were Auckland's volcanoes such an attraction to early Maori? Why is it that Auckland's freshest water comes out of our volcanoes? This book answers these and many more questions. Volcanoes of Auckland is the essential guide for locals and tourists, school children and scientists, as they climb up Mt Eden or North Head and take in the volcanic landscape that so shapes life in our city. A fully illustrated field guide for Aucklanders and visitors to take with them out among the 53 volcanoes that shape this city. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
