Hawtrey was Head-Master of Eton College (1834-53) and his sermon is a mere ten pages. The major part of the book contrasts the education systems - from grammar-schools through universities - in Scotland, with those of England. The sermon was also included in The First Report of the English National School Society in France, published by William Watts (London, 1845). Contents. I. Introductory II. On the grammar-schools, and philological classes in the colleges of Edinburgh and Glasgow. III. On extending the course of grammar-school education, the English schools Westminster and Eton, the private classes at Glasgow. IV. On the usefulness of classical learning; its universality in Scotland and hints respecting the establishment of academies. V. On the various methods of teaching philosophy: the lecture system of Scotland contrasted with the practice of English universities. VI. On the logic, ethic and physic classes of the Scottish colleges, particularly of Edinburgh and Glasgow. On examinations and essay writing, and the advantages of early composition. VII. On the system of education pursued at Aberdeen with remarks on the systems of the other universities. VIII. On public annual examinations, academical police, and the expense of education in Scotland.
