Louis Priscilla's uniform studies and action drawings, retained from the original edition, enrich the text alongside maps specially selected for this revision. The book functions both as an accessible introduction to naval development and as a reliable reference widely used in military-education settings. This first printing of the New and Revised Edition is in Very Good condition, with clean blue cloth boards, strong binding, and crisp interiors showing only mild toning and light foxing to the endpapers. The original (unclipped) dust jacket is graded Good, with edgewear, short tears, rubbing, and foxing to the flaps but remains complete and presentable. Edition statements on the copyright page clearly designate this as the First Printing, June 1962, with no later printings or number lines present and illustrations credited to Louis Priscilla as in the 1957 edition. Fletcher Pratt (1897-1956) was an influential American military historian, naval analyst, and prolific writer of both nonfiction and science fiction. Known for his engaging narrative style and meticulous research, Pratt authored numerous works on military strategy and naval history, many of which remain reference points for scholars. His collaborator for this edition, Commander Hartley E. Howe, brought contemporary naval expertise to Pratt's final work, ensuring its continued relevance into the Cold War era.
