Account of the history, geography and archeology of nations in the eastern Mediterranean, with observations on Christian, Jewish and Muslim culture. The engravings on steel and wood are from original drawings by Harry Fenn and J. D. Woodward. Text by eleven renowned British explorers and scholars covering Palestine, Egypt and Arabia. Includes chapters by Mary Eliza Rogers, noted Victorian travel writer who traveled with her brother Thomas of the British diplomatic service and wrote 'Domestic Life in Palestine' published in 1860. Three chapters of observations here by her, including: 'Acre, the Key of Palestine'; Mount Carmel and the River Kishon'; 'Maritime Cities and Plains of Palestine'; Mount Hor and the Cliffs of Edom; and The Convent of St. Catherine. These first American editions feature embossed front and back covers and gold lit on the edges of the pages and in embossed title. Covers show wear in the form of rubs on the spines and corners. Boards are flat and parallel and binding is square and tight. These volumns would be in very good condition if not for foxing on both and light water damage on volumn II. None of the engraved pages appear to have any water damage, though foxing is evident on most of the plates. For students of Middle East history and culture, these volumns are excellent references for what the Middle East looked like at the turn of the 20th century. Because these volumns are in such good condition they would make a great addition to any historian's library. These first American editions in excellent condition have sold as high as $4500. No Jacket. lxvii, 760 pages : illustrations ; 29 cm OCLC 52073501 This reprint of the first edition of Sweet's Catalog commemorates the 90th anniversary of the Sweet's business."--Foreword ; "In offering to the public, and especially to the architects of the United States, the first edition of Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction, the publishers have realized at the very outset the importance of stating clearly, first, what the book is, and secondly, the reasons for commending it to the architectural profession for their use and support. .to explain in a few words the character and purpose of the work, . a embodied in these first successful efforts toward a really scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction. Let the matter be looked at entirely from the point of view of the architect. For a period of a dozen years, every possible method of collecting, sorting, classifying, filing and indexing all the catalogues and circulars of building materials was conscientiously given a fair trial, and after a thorough test, every method was just as conscientiously abandoned. They were abandoned because they did not work well in the specification room. They were not practicable. Everything was tried, arrangements of shelves, bookcases, pasteboard boxes, filing cases, patent binders, filing cabinets, cases of drawers, indexing schemes and " index- rerums. " At first, all the big books were put together in one place and all the little books in another place; and then all the big and little books were mixed up together, and indexed according to subject. Some had four pages, and some had four hundred pages. Barely two were of the same shape or superficies. The little ones would not stand up, and could not be gotten at when laid flat. Another elaborate system was introduced, and a voluminous cross-index started, but the big books contained too much useless matter, and the little books got lost or mislaid or could not be found just when wanted. Then the writer decided, after much time and expense, that the present system of publishing and distributing catalogues, as far as the architect is concerned, might be rightly termed " The Catalogue Delusion, " and that the only solution of the problem must lie in a scientific standard catalogue and index of building materials and construction, gradually developed toward an ideal result by the co-operation of manufacturer and architect. Briefly, then, what is Sweet's Indexed Catalogue of Building Construction? It is a scientific catalogue book system ( a volume or series of volumes) , as easy to refer to as a dictionary, consisting of groups of catalogues from which as much unnecessary matter as possible has been eliminated, carefully indexed and cross- indexed, and sent out gratuitously by the publishers to every architect of good standing. Each catalogue in the work is organically arranged in its parts. It proceeds in a regular order from fact " A " to fact " Z " . Illustrations of a certain class are all grouped and arranged according to some obvious plan.
