This task he undertook with skill and enthusiasm. Contemporaries with Frost were the painters in Norwich who later became known as the Norwich School. Further mention will be made of these painters in East Anglian Painters, Volume II. Prior to Gainsborough the only artists practising in eighteenth century East Anglia were the portrait painters. Gainsborough's landscape painting was the beginning of a new era. Whilst influenced by Dutch and French landscape painting there was also an element of true English Art in his work.
