Añadir al carritoFIRST EDITION, a handful of spots to border of half-title and final page of text, the odd faint spot between, pp. [viii], 40, foolscap 8vo, original green cloth, the gilt lettering to backstrip now largely rubbed away, illustrated endpapers (a design by the author?), Foyle's ticket to front pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription of Peter Gammond to flyleaf (see below), good. The copy of Peter Gammond, who, like Hodson, read English at Wadham College, Oxford, and cultivated a diverse career in the arts - both were poets, but Gammond was also a composer, artist and broadcaster, whilst Hodson was better known as an artist, and occasionally a critic. Laid in are two pieces of autograph correspondence from Hodson to Gammond; the first, a postcard from early September 1950 with some amusing cartoons by Hodson to the margins of both sides, responds to the latter's request for contributions - for, it transpires, an anthology that he is editing - and suggests that he might also enlist Michael Davis, Michael Hamburger, or Francis King; the second, a letter from the end of the same month, continues on the same matter and in the same amusingly self-deprecatory fashion (it includes a self-parody in verse as well as some wry criticism attributed to The Tablet), proposing an order for the poems and enclosing the eight poems listed in manuscript. [With:] 8 manuscript poems by Hodson, written in black or blue ink on sheets of varying size and format, stapled together - these fair copies of poems subsequently collected in 'The Visitor', with minimal variants to the published versions. To the verso of the last sheet is a cartoon of some rabbits, partially obscured by black ink smudges.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. JANE BOWN and HARO HODSON are of an era; their careers coinciding at The Observer newspaper in the 1940s, leading to a life-long friendship described by a colleague as "rather like brother and sister, close but with a bit of friendly sparring." ILLUSTRATIONS: Jane loved animals, especially dogs, & particularly Labradors. Haro loves pug-dogs. It created an amusing theme for their correspondence, with envelopes, letters, & cards adorned and decorated with hand -drawn dancing vivacious pugs & bewildered or snoozing Labradors. They peer around the edges of the envelopes, drift across page headings and sneak into margins, often sharing space with several cats & the odd chicken or bear. The correspondence is alive with drawings and cartoons: Jane herself is frequently portrayed as a cat with a camera, and her Labrador Muffin "Muff" calmly watches proceedings from the later pages. Martin (Jane's husband, Martin Moss) makes an appearance occasionally as a colonial type in shorts wielding a map, while Jane quietly takes photographs in the background. The drawings become a second dialogue; a portrait of a warm, fond, and sparkling relationship emerges from witty doodles and a few cleverly drawn lines. COLLECTION OF CORRESPONDENCE: In excess 9,905 words. Letters hand-written in Haro's distinctive bold & stylish script. An affectionate and amusing collection of letters & cards, with plenty of advice and encouragement liberally splashed out to "Dearest Jane," "Dearest Bownuska," "Bownie Dear," or simply "Bown." The majority are addressed to Jane, however correspondence also includes letters to Jane's husband, Martin Moss, & both. LETTERS 1965-1982: Many on headed paper from The Observer & Daily Mail. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: 1974 Envelope decorated with a bear holding a large red heart / Envelope with a stork proudly displaying an egg for 'Mr & Mrs Martin Moss' written on "All Hallows Eve '74" & commenting "I thought of you this morning confronted by- or perhaps confronting Jessica Mitford. You poor darling! How too shaming for you having to lug that desperate looking spool of film all round Knightsbridge." / 1975 On headed Daily Mail paper; "Dearest Jane & Martin" the letter describes visiting their new house for the first time "Morning light brought no disappointment .I love the house & think it exactly right for you." Continuing to muse" If I do join the Mail perhaps I could infringe the Observer pension?" Beneath is a drawing of an enthusiastic Labrador bouncing towards 'Mrs. Compton's Drawing Room' & two disgruntled cats "Hmmm.it was quite peaceful up this chimney." LETTERS 1983-1988: Headed paper from Garsington & doctored headed paper 'Mouse Service' complete with doodles of cheese, mice, and/or cats. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: 1986 financial worries, heading towards retirement from the Daily Mail "At 63 I'm getting too old for the racketty work the Mail demands, but with Tobs still unlaunched at 26, must soldier on. Thank God Peregrine is Ok in Tokyo." / 1987: An elderly vicar wields a croquet mallet over 'Mrs. Martin Moss, Parsonage Farm.' On 'M'ouse Service headed paper, Haro advises 'Dear Bown.I do hope that you really will tackle that smelly old Obs. ref. pay: it's quite wrong that you, their best snapper & all, should be treated as a beginner. Threaten to leave-say you now want to live with ducks & donks -even tell a whopper & say you're thinking about the Sunday Times."/ Dec. 1988: a very superior pug lounges across an envelope, noted as "Sam, who adores his Xmas circlet of silver fur;" the letter encloses an uncashed cheque to Jane Bown for £10 "Happy 1989 & with all its dizzying freedom from treadmill hours (for Martin). Only another year, Bown, until your fortieth & can then retire into your darkroom." LETTERS 1990-2005: A bold, freehand script splashing letters with thanks, support, & advice. Familiar & domestic conversation between old friends, spiced with snips of gossip & comment on professional & public life. EXAMPLES INCLUDE: Aug.11th '98 "it is not every day that a young inexperienced girl must bend the knee (and a knee liberally festooned with Leicas) before the husband of her Sovereign. Now Jane, a little word of comfort & advice .no strong liquor nor medicamant before stepping into the carriage. Recall likewise that Him before whom you must bow-came from a broken Home far from these shores. Treat him as tenderly as you know how." signed Your Affec. Uncle H. Reginald Victor Hodson.' / 2005: comment on "Blair - no exclamation mark needed" following JB's Blair portrait commission. Haro is also considering his own legacy "your Mr. Lake was a treat .I wonder if he really would relieve me of my Obs. drawings. Fingers crossed." "I've just been interviewed by the? Times- a nice chap who said after a bit that he was working class. I didn't know what the response should be 'Bad luck old thing' or 'Congrats!' or 'Well I'm not.' So I said "Have another cup." CARDS: PLAIN POSTCARDS with whimsical sketches & quick notes, such as June 1992 a pug dresses as a nurse offers a bottle of medicine to Her Majesty's image on the stamp with a cloud hovering "Chas'n'Di/ Anne'n' ? /Andy'n'Fergie." Then in August 1992 a newspaper cutting pasted onto a card quotes "The Queen. looked grim under her head scarf .the Duke of York said:"We strongly disapprove of the publication of pictures taken in such circumstances" a pug drawing, staring in disgust at the cutting, comments "and We strongly disapprove of such circumstances." / An early card from July 1976 addressed to Mrs Martin Moss simply has line drawings of worried-looking cats peering out, and the word 'JANE!' CHRISTMAS CARDS:official printed cards with illustrations by Haro; together with beautifully hand-drawn personal Puggy Christmas Cards. to Jane & Martin & family: a 'God Rest You Merry Gentlemen' Pug looks very content beneath a silver star; two'Happy Christmas' Pug Pups beat a drum; & Black-Faced Pug dances, waving a wand of Christmas Wishes. EMPTY ENVELOPES. Signedes.

Añadir al carritoFIRST EDITION, pp. [viii], 40, foolscap 8vo, original green cloth, gilt lettering to backstrip, a smattering of faint spots to top edge, endpapers with designs by the author, dustjacket with an illustration (by the author?) wrapping round, little nick at head of backstrip panel, very good. Inscribed by the author to the verso of the flyleaf, 'SS, with love from HH', this within Hodson's sketch of a dove rising towards the sun - at the foot of the same he has added '(I'm sorry about the bad ones)' next to a suitably dismayed dog. Hodson was primarily known as a cartoonist. The dove and dog occur in another book inscribed by Hodson and Sassoon that we have catalogued, suggesting them to be part of their private iconography. Though Hodson was almost forty years Sassoon's junior, their friendship was an enduring one, and lasted from the latter half of the 1940s until the poet's death; their correspondence is held at Cambridge.
