102 x 67 mm. 1854 wurde Hans Gude Nachfolger Johann Schirmers an der Düsseldorfer Akademie, legte aber 1861das Amt nieder, um sich auf Studienreisen weiter zu bilden; später unterrichtete er an der Akademie in Karlsruhe und übernahm 1880 die Leitung des Meisterateliers für Landschaftsmalerei in Berlin, die er bis zu seinem Tod innehatte. Seine Ölgemälde sind vorwiegend Darstellungen nordischer Landschaften. Vgl. Thieme/B. XV, 189f.

Drei Briefe aus Karlsruhe an einen "lieben Freund", mit dem er einen möglichen Wechsel von Karlsruhe nach Berlin bespricht. 1874 sollte dieser Wechsel nicht stattfinden, 1880 ging er dann als Leiter der Meisterklasse für Landschaftsmalerei an die Berliner Akademie: "Es ist aber eine für das ganze Leben so entscheidende Frage, daß alle anderen Rücksichten schweigen müssen. Es scheint mir, daß ich in der allernächsten Zeit genöthigt werde, endgültig einen Entschluß zu fassen. Ich kenne ja jetzt alles, was für Berlin und was für Hierbleiben spricht, es gilt nur beides auf die Waagschale zu legen und - das Rechte zu treffen! [.]" (a. d. Br. v. 3. XII. 1874). - Die Postkarte aus Berlin von 1890 an eine Frau Professorin I. (oder J.) Hauser in Karlsruhe: "Sehr gern will ich das Bild malen, wie Sie es wünschen, und zwar kann ich es in 3 Wochen schicken [.]". - Stellenweise etwas fleckig.
