Paperback. Condición: New. A testament of great emotional power, the book presents the Malcolm X that very few knew, the man behind the stereotyped firebrand - a sensitive, proud, highly intelligent man who passionately and lucidly articulated the struggle and the beliefs of African Americans in the 1960s. Cut short by the riddle of assassins' bullets, Malcolm X held the preminition that he would not live long enough to see this book appear. It is,in its dead level honesty, an established classic of modern America. 'The most important book I'll ever read. It changed the way I thought; it changed the way I acted' - Spike Lee.…

paperback. Condición: Very Good. Museum of Fine Arts, Boston [Published Date: 1996] Softcover, 158 pp : color and black and white illustrations ; 30 cm. In very good condition with light bumping to edges, fading to spine and light overall scuffing. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. [From Publisher] During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Chinese furniture reached a pinnacle of fine design and workmanship. Beyond the Screen: Chinese Furniture of the 16th and 17th Centuries leads the reader on a journey that encompasses not only the evolution of this exquisite furniture design but also the many literary, architectural, and visual contexts in which it appeared. Accompanying the catalogue, Ming woodblock prints and excerpts from Ming literature portray and describe furniture as it was used in daily life. Catalogue entries explain both customary and less-usual functions for the furnishings. The space under beds, for instance, was occasionally used by lovers to hide from jealous husbands, and in prints chairs are seen being tossed from windows during brawls. Four essays by scholars in the field explore the furniture and the members of late-Ming society, from the carpenters to the patrons responsible for its magnificence. In "Furnishing the Self in Early Modern China," Craig Clunas describes the status of furniture within the prosperous households that patronized the finest furniture makers. Sarah Handler details the changing designs and styles of furniture types in her essay "Wood Shaped and Standing Through the Winds of Time: The Evolution of Chinese Furniture." The carpenters and their skills are the focus of "The Furniture Maker and the Woodworking Traditions of China," by Curtis Evarts. And Wang Zhengshu, in "Conjectures on Models of Ming-Period Furniture Excavated from the Pan Yunzheng Tomb in Shanghai," investigates a remarkable set of miniature wooden furniture found in the 1589 tomb of a Ming official.…

Hardcover. Condición: Used - Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Chinese furniture reached a pinnacle of exceptional design and meticulous workmanship. 'Beyond the Screen' leads the reader on a journey that encompasses not only the evolution of these exquisite furnishings, but also includes the many literary, architectural and visual contexts in which they were created. Alongside 64 superb color photographs of the furniture itself, numerous Ming woodblock prints and literary excerpts show how furniture was used in daily life--as everything from a lover's hiding place to a projectile thrown during arguments. A vital response to the West's increasing interest in traditional Chinese furniture, this beautifully produced volume is both an illustration of the aesthetic possibilities of furniture design and a fascinating look at China during the early modern period. Bottom front edge of dust jacket with small moisture stain; front cover with light stain in corresponding area. Interior pages in very nice, like-new condition. Wrapped in complimentary Brodart dust jacket protector.…

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X began in 1959 when journalist Alex Haley first met with the religious and political leader Malcolm X (n?e Little) regarding an article for Reader's Digest on the Nation of Islam (NOI). X, who had abandoned his surname in accordance with the Nation's beliefs, had risen to a prominent position beneath the group's head, Elijah Muhammad following incarceration. Cultivated to become a leader and recruiter by Muhammad, Malcolm X established himself independently as a powerful activist, leading Haley to interview him again for Playboy in 1962. The 1962 interview inspired Doubleday to request that Haley publish an entire book on Malcolm X. He broached X in 1963 and, after surmounting some reservations about Haley's identity as a middle-class Christian who tenured in the U.S. military, X agreed to the autobiography with the permission of Elijah Muhammad. Haley would spend the next two years interviewing Malcolm X, compiling, chronicling, and annotating the history of his life. As they wrote, X's beliefs changed; a pilgrimage to Mecca increased X's disillusionment with the NOI and Elijah Muhammad. He began to distance himself before officially breaking ties with the NOI in 1964 and converting to Sunni Islam. This rift caused difficulty in the narrative structure of the novel, which X fought with Haley over his desire to control. Malcolm X would never get the chance, as he was assassinated in early 1965. The book was published posthumously, with Haley acting as a co-collaborator to finish it, and remains a primary source in revolutionary history. It is told as a spiritual conversion narrative that outlines the tenants that X taught of Black power, Black pride, Black nationalism, and Pan-Africanism. This first edition, first printing of THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MALCOLM X is the original manuscript completed by Haley, including an epilogue containing his comments about Malcolm X: the humanist he was, the martyr and icon that he is. 1398624.
