Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Hailed by some as the most important Scottish poet since Burns, Hamish Henderson lived an epic life against the backdrop of some of the defining social, political and cultural battles - both national and international - of the twentieth century. A soldier, academic, folklorist, political activist, songwriter, translator and poet, he was a seminal figure in the Scottish folk revival and literary renaissance. His humanist legacy lives on in all of these spheres, but it is perhaps through his poetry that we may experience, most keenly, the 'method in his magic.' In every verse and lyric we catch glimpses of a brilliant, complex and highly original mind, whilst also developing a fuller understanding of Henderson's lifelong mission to 'make poetry become people.' Published to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Hamish Henderson, this collected poems is the first since the poet's death and makes available, for the first time, new material from the archive. The book opens with Freedom Becomes People, first published in Chapman 42, and reproduces, in full, his Ballads of World War II and Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica. This volume pushes at the boundaries between high modernist poetics and popular folk song; between the profound and profane; between works of individual and collective endeavour and between the poet and his purpose.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Henderson wrote, sang, and agitated for a Scottish socialist republic, for the dissolution of the British empire and its legacies, and for a conception of human value incommensurable with exploitation under late capitalism. His formative influences were his childhood exposure to Scotland's anonymous song-poetry, and the comradely solidarity of the anti-fascist struggle of his young adulthood. Henderson's poetic voice, therefore, is at once queer, collectivist, radical, romantic, viciously satirical, and over-earnest. It reaches always for a way of reconciling the voice of the artist with those whom they presume to speak for, to, or out of and it wrestles tirelessly with the weight of history and the immediacy of emancipatory struggle. This book pushes at and often transgresses the boundaries between high modernist poetics and popular folk song, between the profound and profane, between works of individual artistic endeavour and the mass of stubborn ephemera ascribed to 'anon'. Published to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Hamish Henderson, this collected poems is the first since the poets death and makes available, for the first time, new material from the archive. Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Fist Edition Thus. 2000. 164pp. Cover illustration by Fred Crayk. "Hamish Henderson is one of the most interesting, not to say outstanding, voices of 20th century Scotland and his poetry, by its very nature, evokes much that is vital to Scottish and European history, society and culture. These are poems of lyrical intensity and gentle humour, of subtle irony and satirical intent, of profound humanity and, on occasion, of cold steel. Henderson writes with fire in his belly and love in his heart of war and peace, of the Highland, urban and desert landscapes, of the footslogging and swaddie and the resistance hero, of childhood memories and erotic encounters, of pain, love, regret and death. And hope. . But perhaps the underlying and unifying concern is faith: faith in ordinary humanity to pull through whatever the odds. Of the many outstanding 20th century poets Scotland has produced, it is perhaps Henderson, above all the others, who gives to that ordinary humanity in its quest for survival and for better days." The book is in very good condition. Gift inscription to top of the first page.
