Arthur Dudley: 'Yass, and if the deah English Prince would only come ovah, I could - aw - die happy, son't you know.' " Grant E. Hamilton was an American artist, illustrator and political cartoonist. He eventually became the art editor for JUDGE, a position he held for more than 20 years. In addition to his fame as a political cartoonist, Hamilton was the creator of the 'full dinner pail' campaign slogan used by President McKinley in the 1896 Presidential campaign when he was running against William Jennings Bryan. He also held the position of chief of the government art bureau during World War I. The Duke and Duschess of Veragua, alledged direct descendants of Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus), made a Grand Tour in 1893, making an impression in many social circles. The tour included a visit with President Grover Cleveland to attend the World's Fair in Chicago where reproductions of the early documents of his family were on display (many on loan from the Duke himself).

Full page cover of JUDGE magazine for May 18, 1901 titled "McKinley Oil for Hard Times" featuring a wonderful color lithograph depicting a man with a McKinley ribbon feeding geese labeled "Cuba", "Porto Rico," "Hawaii" and "Philippines." Illustration by Grant Hamilton, lithographed at Sackett & Wilheims Litho & Printing. The Spindletop oil discovery in 1901 near Beaimont, Texas, launched the petroleum industry in the United States. In 1901 the final negotiations took place for the settlement terms of the Spanish American War. The result was a large step in American expansion, with the annexation of Porto Rico and Hawaii and with Spain reliquishing The Philippines and Cuba to independence. Grant E. Hamilton was an American artist, illustrator and political cartoonist. He eventually became the art editor for JUDGE, a position he held for more than 20 years. This book provides an analysis of literary works created by women in the latter half of the 1800s to the early 1900s and their contribution to the nuances of feminist discussion and the fluctuation in its meaning. The study focuses on the evolution of these writers' analysis of sexuality, motherhood, freedom and autonomy and employment and economic empowerment and how this related to their own life experiences. The author explores these women's use of literary devices such as irony, symbolism, and paradox in constructing their female protagonists and the implications these devices had for the women's own lives as artists and thinkers. In a time of significant social change during the late Victorian period, these writers wrote stories that navigated women's experiences of independence, sexuality and desire, and their struggle to overcome the limitations placed upon them by society's patriarchal structure. Exploring the significance of these writers' contributions to the development of feminist literary theory, this book underscores how they challenged traditional gender roles, questioned societal norms, and ultimately transformed the literary landscape of their time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritoPrint. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 1 pages; Image clean and clear, with bright white matting. Image measures 13 X 9.25 inches; matted measures 22 X 14 inches. Full page cover of JUDGE magazine for April 11, 1908 depicting William Jennings Bryan as a golliwog (African American caricature) with a basket of eggs representing electoral delegates, some of them dropping to the floor and cracking. Beyond the door is a sign pointing to Denver (site of the Democratic National Convention), and hiding in the dark is an image of Bryan's primary challenger Minnesota Governor John Albert Johnson with a threateningly raised hatchet labeled "Minnesota Delegates." The 1908 U.S. Presidential election occurred in the backdrop of the Progressive achievements of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt's second term as well as against the U.S. recovery following the Panic of 1907. In this election, Roosevelt's chosen successor, Republican William Howard Taft, ran in large part on Roosevelt's Progressive legacy and decisively defeated former Congressman and three-time Democratic U.S. Presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. This Judge illustration refers to the primary challenge to Bryan whose most formidable challenger was Minnesota Governor John Albert Johnson. Johnson's rags-to-riches story, honesty, reformist credentials, and ability to win in a heavily Republican U.S. state made him popular within the Democratic Party. Johnson ultimately was unable to overcome Bryan, and by the end of June 1908 Bryan had the two-thirds of the delegates needed to win the nomination. At the 1908 Democratic National Convention, Johnson released his delegates to Bryan, helping Bryan to win the nomination on the first ballot.
