Late 16th or early 17th-century red morocco, gilt rules, corner fleurons and central gilt ornament to boards, gilt fillets and title to spine, gilt tooling to board edges, marbled endpapers, edges of text block gilt, 1881 bookplate identifying the purchase of this volume from the Sunderland House library by Bernard Quaritch to front pastedown, ink and pencil shelfmarks to verso of front free endpaper. Some scuffs, nicks and scratches to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities, corners lightly bumped and worn. Woodcut historiated initials. Moderate toning to interior, occasional very faint staining/heavier toning, light foxing and soiling in a few places, small repaired hole to head of title page not affecting text, early ink underlining and brief annotations (citations and cross-references) to several leaves. Along with the Institutes, Digest and Novels, the Code is one of the writings known collectively as the Corpus Juris Civilis. The first three books were commissioned by Justinian I in 528 CE. The Code is the restated code of law, the Digest is a compilation of legal opinions and the Institutes is an introductory textbook on the Code. The Novels is a compilation of laws enacted after the publication of the Code. The subsequent influence of these books on European jurisprudence is difficult to overestimate. Despite his short life, Haloander was one of the great sixteenth-century authorities on Roman law.
