Dat is de vraag die centraal staat in deze rechtshistorische studie naar de ontwikkeling van Eijsden in de periode 1300-1550. Op basis van rechtsregels en rechtspraktijk, in combinatie met ruimtelijke, demografische en sociaaleconomische aspecten concludeert Hans van Hall, dat Eijsden als een stadje ? een Minderstadt ? kan worden beschouwd. Eijsden is exemplarisch voor tal van stadjes die in de Late Middeleeuwen door diverse landsheren zijn gesticht in het politiek fel betwiste gebied aan weerskanten van de Maas. Zo verleende de prinsbisschop van Luik privileges aan Eijsden die ontleend zijn aan het stadsrecht van Luik. Het zogenaamde Vrijheidsboek legt hiervan getuigenis af. Een tekstkritische en geannoteerde editie van het Eijsdense Vrijheidsboek is daarom als losse bijlage opgenomen in deze studie. 1400g.
