Paperback. Condición: Good. In developing the most comprehensive theory of social interaction among humans to date, the author has also constructed a general theory of micro dynamics for sociology and social psychology. He does so by reviewing existing theories of the past and present, synthesixing these concepts into abstract models and principles of social interaction. In contrast to Talcott Parsons and many others, the book argues that social interaction, rather than action and behaviour, is sociology's most basic unit of analysis. This unit is conceptualized as involving three processes: (1) motivational, or the process of mobilizating and energizing interactive behaviour, (2) interactional, or the process of mutual signaling and interpreting with symbols, and (3) structuring, or the process of repeating and organizing social interactions in time and place. For each of these three constituent processes, the relevant theories are analyzed and then synthesized into composite models and general laws. Finally, the author combines these composite models to produce a general, albeit tentative theory of micro dynamics in sociology, a theory that the author hopes will encourage empirical tests by researchers and possible modifications by theorists.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Language and culture are often seen as unique characteristics of human beings. In this book the author argues that our ability to use a wide array of emotions evolved long before spoken language and, in fact, constituted a preadaptation for the speech and culture that developed among later hominids. Long before humans could speak with words, they communicated through body language their emotional dispositions; and it is the neurological wiring of the brain for these emotional languages that represented the key evolutionary breakthrough for our species. How did natural selection work on the basic ape anatomy and neuroanatomy to create the hominid line? The author suggests that what distinguished our ancestors from other apes was the development of an increased capacity for sociality and organization, crucial for survival on the African savanna. All apes display a propensity for weak ties, individualism, mobility, and autonomy that was, and is today, useful in arboreal and woodland habitats but served them poorly when our ancestors began to move onto the African plain during the late Miocene. The challenge for natural selection was to enhance traits in the species that would foster the social ties necessary for survival in the new environment. The author suggests that the result was a development of certain areas of the primate brain that encouraged strong emotional ties, allowing our ancestors to build higher levels of social solidarity. Our basic neurological wiring continues to reflect this adaptive development. From a sociological perspective that is informed by evolutionary biology, primatology, and neurology, the book examines the current neurological bases of our emotional repertoire and their implications for our social actions.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Rotgut Rustlers takes us on a fascinating tour of an often overlooked era of the West, a span of more than half a century from the late 1800s to the 1940s--from a period when vast reaches of the frontier were still lawless, into and beyond the Prohibition years, which were a boon not only to Chicago mobsters but to bootleggers from the Mississippi to the Pacific. It brings together twenty-five true stories about the wild outlaws and wild towns of the West during these years--stories about bank and stagecoach robbers, cattle rustlers, smugglers, counterfeiters, gamblers, racketeers, bootleggers, and crooked politicians. You'll meet: Ned Christie, the proud Cherokee who resisted arrest in Oklahoma by holing up in his makeshift log fortress Lawrence Kelly, who smuggled everything from illegal immigrants to opium into Washington State Lou Blonger, the elegant Coloradoan swindler who made a huge fortune off poor suckers Stelle and Bennie Dickson, who did their best to become South Dakota's very own Bonnie and Clyde.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. It Happened in Northern California takes readers on a rollicking, behind-the-scenes look at some of the characters and episodes from the state's storied past. Including both famous tales, and famous names--and little-known heroes, heroines, and happenings. Northern California is well known for its towering redwoods, Spanish missions, and gold mines, but few know about the two-year-long Native American occupation of Alcatraz, efforts by some northern Californians to establish the US's fifty-first state, or that John Sutter never capitalized on the gold rush that began on his land. It Happened in Northern California goes behind the scenes to tell these stories and many more, in short episodes that reveal the intriguing people and events that have shaped The Golden State.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. All social relations involve emotional responses, from the simplest face-to-face encounter through the mobilization of social movements to the commitments that individuals develop for culture and society. The social world is thus dependent upon the arousal of emotions, and equally significant conflict and change in societies is ultimately driven by emotional arousal. Thus, it is important to understand how human emotions influence, and are influenced by, the social world. This understanding takes us into the sociology of emotions that has emerged as a distinct area of inquiry over the last thirty years. …

Paperback. Condición: Good. Its wilderness notwithstanding, the Wild West was not necessarily a place to go in search of peace. While many settlers were decent folk, the American frontier's wide open spaces also attracted unsavory characters in disproportionate numbers, many on the run looking for places to hide while they went on snubbing the law. Badasses of the Old West brings together in one compelling volume tales of the thirty-six worst (and best) robbers, rustlers, and bandits who shaped the history of the Wild West. From the famous, such as Billy the Kid and the Wild Bunch, to the lesser-known but still colorful and wicked Charles Brown and Bud Stevens, it compiles the stories of the most notorious black-hat wearers of a notorious age. Here are just some of the fascinating and forbidding faces you'll meet: Bud Stevens, whose murder of a cattle king's son rang a death knell for an entire South Dakota town William Quantrill, the terror of Civil War-era Missouri Legendary bandits Frank and Jesse James Cold-blooded Sam Brown, who sneered while cutting out a man's heart but screamed in terror when the tables turned Jack Slade, who was such an enigma across much of the West--a composite of gentleman and murderer--that he charmed both Mark Twain and Buffalo Bill.…
