Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt. - The great progress during the last generation in the field of somatic medicine has undoubtedly in some way contributed to the somewhat underprivileged position of psychiatry but has certainly also provided material for its possible and wanted expansion. Psychiatry has especially derived benefit from neurophysiological and endocrinological findings, from the improved diagnostics in cerebral disorders and from the study on the relationship between various drugs and neuropsychiatrie responses. A development can actually be traced in the psychiatric field proper. From isolation, public assistance and nursing of patients in far-off institutions we have attained to efficacious therapeutical interventions in several mental disorders, both in the case of ambulant treatment and in hospital departments where the work is done in close connection with other medical specialities. From dealing previously with the major psychoses only, with mental deficiency and psychopathy we have now been enabled to activate psychiatric research and treatment also in cases of neurosis, for instance, and neurotic characters. The mental disorders are, however, almost all and nearly always of a very varied genesis. As a rule, both biological and psychosocial factors are in evidence to a varying degree. The entirety viewpoint which has been more narrowly and concretely formulated in Gestalt psychology has been found empirically to be not only valuable but also necessary in ordinary psychiatric working methods both practically and from the point of view of recognition.
