A geophysicist and physical chemist, Robert Browning Sosman authored THE PHASES OF SILICA (1965, New Brunswick: Rutgers University Press). Sosman received his Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1907, at the age of 26. By 1908 he had joined the Geo-Physical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Dr. Sosman worked at the Geo-Physical Laboratory for 20 years, serving 8 years as Assistant Director. During World War I, his contributions were instrumental in establishing America's capacity for manufacturing optical glass. In 1928 he left to join the United States Steel Corporation as Assistant Director of Research.
