First published in hardcover by Harper & Row in January 1979, this Bantam edition appeared in February 1980; the copyright page identifies the present copy as the second printing and states that Hasford made minor revisions to the text for this edition. The novel follows Marine recruit James T. "Joker" Davis from brutal basic training through combat during the Vietnam War. Hasford drew upon his experience as a Marine combat correspondent with the First Marine Division during the Tet Offensive. The Short-Timers later became the literary basis for Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film Full Metal Jacket, whose screenplay was credited to Kubrick, Michael Herr, and Hasford. Condition: Original illustrated wrappers with the printed $2.25 cover price. Covers show moderate to heavy rubbing, scratching, soiling, and general handling wear. Front wrapper has corner creasing, edge wear, and a small pale rectangular area of sticker residue or surface loss within the title design. Additional rubbing and small abrasions appear along the spine and wrapper edges. Spine remains legible and the binding appears sound. Pages are substantially age-toned, with scattered spotting and minor stains, particularly around the opening leaves and lower margins. No ownership inscription or substantial annotation is visible in the photographed portions. A complete, serviceable copy with considerable cosmetic wear; please examine photographs closely. This is an especially desirable early paperback printing because it uses the original pre-film cover design and contains Hasford's revised text. The book has remained out of print for many years, and surviving early Bantam copies have become increasingly sought after by collectors of Vietnam War literature, modern military fiction, Stanley Kubrick source material, and film adaptations.
