The cover is particularly attractive period movie ephemera, printed in orange, black and gray with a circular photographic portrait of MacDonald and Eddy and a complete list of songs from the picture. The interior specifically identifies this number as "Sung by Nelson Eddy." This is an original 1938 movie-tie-in issue, rather than a later nostalgic reprint: the music itself carries the 1938 Leo Feist copyright and the publisher's contemporary 1629 Broadway address. The film opened in 1938 under Robert Z. Leonard's direction, with MacDonald, Eddy, Walter Pidgeon, Leo Carrillo and Buddy Ebsen. AFI records an interesting bit of musical history behind it: MGM had acquired David Belasco's play - the same source Puccini used for La fanciulla del West - but deliberately chose not to use Puccini's score, commissioning new music from Sigmund Romberg with lyrics by Gus Kahn instead. Complete as photographed, with sound musical notation and strong cover graphics. Moderate overall handling and age toning; scattered soiling, faint stains and creases; rubbing and edge wear. There is a rectangular 'ghost' on the upper-right of the rear panel, likely from a price tag. No residue remains. Sigmund Romberg (1887-1951) was one of the major composers of American operetta, remembered especially for The Student Prince, The Desert Song and The New Moon. Gus Kahn (1886-1941), one of Tin Pan Alley's most prolific lyricists, wrote or collaborated on standards including "It Had to Be You," "Makin' Whoopee" and "Dream a Little Dream of Me." Their pairing here gives what might otherwise be ordinary movie sheet music an additional Broadway/Tin Pan Alley collecting connection.…

Originally introduced in 1925, the song enjoyed renewed popularity in 1948 following Benny Strong's successful Tower Records recording (#1271), prompting Bourne, Inc. to issue this updated edition featuring Strong's portrait on the cover. Billboard identified the recording as a promising national hit during the summer of 1948, helping revive interest in the Donaldson-Kahn classic for a new generation. Although the copyright page preserves the original 1925 copyright, this is not the 1925 first edition. It is the desirable 1948 Benny Strong revival issue, identifiable by the Tower Records photograph on the cover, Bourne's New York 19 address, and the reference to Tower Record #1271. The music is arranged for voice and piano, while the final page includes a complete page of alternate extra choruses, a feature omitted from many modern reprints.
