Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. Calcutta's wealth is not in ancient monuments, medieval courtrooms or modern skyscrapers. It is in its stories. Perhaps no city in India has inspired the responses of love and disgust as sharply as Calcutta, now Kolkata, where the old and the new, the beautiful and the squalid coexist side by side. Once a global city second only to London, it has often been written off as a dying city. But despite - perhaps because of - all its problems, Calcutta's love the city with the illogical passion of true love. In his 1971 book on the city, Geoffrey Moor house wondered why Calcutta is so strangely beloved. This collection of writings brings out the essence of the attractions this city has to offer - its food, music, theatre, art, politics - by weaving together history and personal experience, social commentary and political critique. Sharing the experiences of renowned writers and poets, academics and historians, who have all loved the life of this city, Strangely Beloved provides a rare and heart-warming glimpse into the heart, mind and soul of one of the greatest cities in the world.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat and climate change/Uttam Kumar Sinha. Notes on contributors. Index. Neither development without self-pride nor self-pride without development are desirable. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for Aatmanirbhar Bharat or a self-reliant India on 12 May 2020 goes beyond mere economic self-reliance. The COVID-19 pandemic brought forth India's unhealthy and unsustainable dependencies on imports, be it of goods, armaments, technology or even ideas. India, thus, needs a course correction, which the Aatmanirbhar model provides. The Aatmanirbhar programme does not imply the return of disastrous import substitution policies of the fifties and the sixties. The Aatmanirbhar programme goes beyond indigenization, and aims to make India self-reliant in political, economic, military, social, and cultural aspects while rediscovering and developing India's inherent strengths. The idea is not to go alone, but rebalance being strategically dependent and strategically interdependent. The editors are encouraged by the Prime Minister's message to this publication. In his words, "India's inner strength, intent and energy is powering the nation's resolute efforts towards building a prosperous and Aatmanirbhar Bharat." Aatmanirbhar Bharat's vision is global peace, prosperity and welfare of all. Through this book, India's leading thinkers and policy stalwarts (including two Padma Shri awardees), dive deep into conceptualizing and outlining the way forward for this arduous, yet ardent vision of Aatmanirbharta. A broad spectrum of the policy space ranging from civilizational and historical discourses to economy, foreign policy, technology, military, rural sector, education, skills development, women, and climate change is covered in the book making it an inspiring read for the decision makers, intelligentsia and the public at large.

Elusive justice. 6. Columbus. 7. Never again. On the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984, methyl isocyanate gas leaking from Union Carbide's factory in Bhopal claimed more than 5,000 lives. More than half a million people still suffer the side effects of the exposure to the gas; the soil and groundwater have been contaminated and toxicity has crossed over to the second and third generations. This book describes the criminal negligence, incompetent governance and the apathy towards victims that have made Bhopal a continuing disaster. It gives voice to people's anguish and is also a testimony to the Centre for Science and Environment's and Down To Earth's long engagement with Bhopal. This book argues that India cannot afford to let Bhopal fade from public memory and concludes with a blueprint to avoid a similar tragedy.

Dalit Writings: Emerging Perspectives provides in twenty-four essays and an Introduction, a critical exploration of the Dalit literary works, the new themes, new voices and perspectives that have emerged therein by the first quarter of the twenty-first century. The different essays trace how the historical, political and social developments that have taken place in India within the last century have made deep impact on the different Dalit groups as well as in the reconstruction of the entire country. Dalit writings, from the Dalits and non-Dalits, from early thinkers like Jotirao Phule and B.R. Ambedkar to the contemporary, such as Kancha Ilaiah, poets like Kalyani Thakur reflect the slow and subtle changes in the identity formation of individuals and groups, their economic and socio-cultural expressions. For ages, the caste-dominated Indian society practiced forms of inequalities and injustice that affected Dalit consciousness and its modes of self-expression. Social reform movements created a growing awareness of their rights and various protest movements spread across the country gave rise to increased literary creativity. The volume here studies closely the Dalit questioning of the nation's claims to provide an egalitarian, democratic society and texts that remind the Indian society its promise to provide equal opportunity to all. In their critical and analytical essays Jasbir Jain, Raj Kumar, Nibir Ghosh, Usha Bande, Jaydeep Sarangi and others examine the theoretical and aesthetic aspects of the literature which has used a wide variety of forms and genre, written in many different Indian languages. With deep roots in acute sense of protest, rebellion and pain, the literature has grown in its variety and output. Recognized on international forums, a review of the Dalit Literatu.

This collection of twelve essays foregrounds the conjunction of the social phenomenon called caste with the genre of representation called life narratives . Life narratives have long been a constitutive archive and a performative mode for testifying to the breadth and ferocity of caste oppression and for articulating a language of caste dissent. Caste and Life Narratives covers a variety of modes of representing actual lives , in whole or in fragments from autobiographies, and interviews to Facebook posts, biopics, visual representations, and most tragically, a suicide note. It uses the notion of Critical Caste Studies , which is vitally animated by Dalit Studies, but is not coterminous with it. While acknowledging the unique status of Dalit and Dalibahujan perspectives, it argues that caste is not the lived reality of Dalits alone and, accordingly, a critical study of caste cannot be solely their burden. Drawing from postcolonial, Dalit and Critical Caste Studies, this syncretic collection of essays offers a unique theoretical and methodological perspectives, provoking new ways of entering into the burgeoning study of caste.

Crossover of various disciplines is an inherent phenomenon of Indian theatre and performing arts. With the coming of western influence during the colonial as well as postcolonial periods, the character of modern Indian theatre has metamorphosed, and this is often reflected in the realistic theatre of the country. The larger sections of the Indian theatre scene belong to the experimental theatre, which derives its energy and motivation from the classical and folk/tribal theatre, and is basically an interdisciplinary theatre. Music, dance, acrobatic movements, gesticulation of emotions are the integral aspects of such theatre. The idea of artistic crossovers in the performing arts does not solely refer to exchanges between artistic disciplines. Art itself, as a whole, can be seen as a discipline in an interdisciplinary relationship with other fields, such as education or the social sciences (anthropology, politics, sociology and so on) and the pure and applied sciences. We also see a lot of negotiations between art and questions that are already interdisciplinary, such as feminism; spirituality; the environment; and political issues of gender, race, class, sexual orientation; etc. The discourses on these subjects inspire many artists for experiments at the level of mixing forms. The collection of various articles in this book presents a varied panoramic view of the artistic crossovers in one way or the other. (jacket).
