Studies on the foraminiferal fauna of five Rupelial sections in the Bavarian molasse and in the Inntaltertiär and also on material housed in the collection of the Bavarian Staatssammlung were made. The foraminiferal fauna was compared to those of the Mainz Basin and Upper Rhine Graben. Apart from the occurence of endemic and cos…mopolitan foraminifers, species were identified which occur in the North Sea and Molasse basin only, but not in the Upper Thine Graben and Mainz Basin. Foraminifers, which existed only in the southern Rhine Graben and in the Molasse Basin, could not be identified in the investigated period. The results demonstrate that during the Rupelian a seaway connection, suitable for foraminifers, between the Bavarian Molasse, the Inntal-Tertiary, the Upper Rhine Graben and the Mainz Basin did not exist. 17 pp., 5 figs, 8.

The wall structure of some foraminifers from the Rupeliam of the Mainz Basin, formerly referred to Spiroplectammina Cushman 1927, is examined. They are classified as Spiroplectinella Kisel'man 1972 because of the occurrence of pseudopores. The genus neither belong to the Spiroplectamminacea nor to the Textulariacea. Hollow approx. 200 µm diameter spheres have been frequently found in the Rupelian "Fischschiefer" of the Mainz Baisin. Spandel (1909) first described them as Orbulina bituminosa and interpreted them as foraminifera. Close spaced sampling of 5 clay quarries in the Rupel area of Belgium and of 8 outcrop and 40 borehole sections in the Mainz Basin has led to an almost continuous foraminiferal record throughout the Middle Rupelian of the southern North Sea Basin. The distribution of foraminifera in the Boom Clay Formation is rather complex and…directly related to its paleobathymetric evolution and its burial history. The exposed Boom Clay section studied here (Beds 1 to 55) can be subdivided in four major intervals, in which nine foraminiferal biofacies can be identified. Comparison with the foraminifera of the "Rupelton" in the Mainz Basin allows to equate the boundary between the "Foraminiferenmergel (FM)" and the "Fischschiefer (FS)" with the Terhagen Clay/Putte Clay boundary, the FM 2/FM 3 boundary with the base of pink layer Bed 21 and the FS A/FS B boundary with the base of the double band (Bed 39). The major changes in lithofacies and in foraminiferal associations reflect substantial changes in circulation in the southern North Sea Basin, due to eustatic sea-level changes and to the closure of marine pathways, related to uplift in the Alpine Foldbelt. 12 pp., 5 figs, 4.

The tintinnid Pseudarcella rhumbleri Spandel, 1909 from the Rupelian (Oligocene) of the Mainz Basin, is redescribed based on a neotype.
