Good condition, a fairly unworn copy with occasional soil on the covers and internally. Some glue residue inside front board where apparently owner's bookplate was removed at some time. No owner names.

Cloth. A solid usable hard cover copy in somewhat worn original cloth. The spine has been relined and the book recased with Japanese tissue hinges. Some internal staining and soiling. #.

The first edition of a diminutive mid-nineteenth century martial vade mecum compiled by British Army officer and military writer Frederick Augustus Griffiths (1795/6-1869). The book ran through eleven editions by 1873. This edition was published at Woolwich, where the author taught at the Royal Military Academy. OCLC and COPAC record copies at just seven locations (BL, Brock, Brown, Cambridge, NLDA, NMS, and Oxford). Size: 12mo.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. Printed for the author by J.J.Hadley, Cheltenham, vii,+ii, 262pp+erata housed in a modern hardback binding. "Since I came on shore, having no residence, I have passed the half of each year in wandering nearly sixteen thousand miles, have visited almost all the sea ports of England and Scotland, and held familiar coversation with the Seamen, without either begging the question, or permitting them to know who I was, or the object in view." Published in 1826 the authors investigation must have taken some years. After the cessation of hostilities with France and the down sizing of the fleet after 1815 the need for impressment became less 'pressing' and was abandoned informally. However the last law passed in 1835 re-affirmed the power to Impress and Impressment remained legal until 1900. These laws have never been repealed. A scarce item in the original.

Speckled page edges, raised banding and embossed decoration to spine, with maroon leather spine label lettered in gilt. In very good condition. Boards rubbed, corners bumped, rubbing to edges and ends of spine. Inscription to endpaper, rear of title page and rear of plate at p96. Some occasional handling marks and minor foxing spots to pages. Else a very good clean and tight copy. xxvii + 372pp. Illustrated with 12 B&W engraved plates, figures and tables within text.

Duodecimo (152 x 95 mm). 12 plates, one of them double-page. Contemporary half black roan on marbled boards. Contemporary ownership inscription of Lt. J. W. Christian to the title page. Light browning, a little rubbed at the extremities with wear to spine ends, front hinge slightly cracked but holding fine, very good condition.
