Añadir al carritohardcover. 1850 First Edition. xii, 122pp, original green cloth, wear to head and tail of spine, sunning to spine and edge of boards, gift inscription to the SMC from William Douglas, owner's signature, blindstamp of the SMC, VG-. William Douglas, 1863-1932, joined the newly formed SMC in 1890, and immediately became one of its most energetic and likeable characters. Only two years after joining that club he took over the post as Journal Editor, a task he performed diligently for 18 years. As a publisher, he was presumably well-equipped for this task. As a mountaineer Douglas was very experienced, having climbed, between 1895 and 1912, in Switzerland, the Dolomites, France and Italy, the Canadian Rockies, Norway, and the Jura Mountains. One of his most notable climbs was a 21-hour traverse of the Meije, with J Rennie, a fellow club member. A very scarce Scottish title and a worthy association copy. . Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.…

Añadir al carritohardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Autumnal Rambles Among the Scottish Mountains; or, Pedestrian Tourist's Friend, Rev. Thomas Grierson, A.M. â" First Edition Publication: Edinburgh, Paton and Ritchie, 1850 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [vi], xii, 122. Condition Report: Good. The original blind-stamped green cloth binding remains sound, though the spine has uniformly sun-faded to brown and exhibits mild rubbing to the extremities. The gilt titling and pricing ('2/-') on the front board remain surprisingly bright and intact against the cloth. Internally, the hinges are secure; however, the original endpapers show typical browning (alongside a neat 1909 ownership signature to the front free endpaper), and the early preliminary leaves, including the tinted lithographed frontispiece and title page, display scattered foxing, with mild spotting occurring occasionally throughout the text block. Catalogue Note: This is a scarce First Edition of Rev. Thomas Grierson's mid-19th-century account of his Scottish highland excursions. Bound in the publisher's original blind-stamped cloth, the volume retains its frontispiece lithograph depicting the "Coolin Mountains from Loch Scavaig." The front free endpaper bears an early ink ownership signature ("Emily H. Franklin 1909."), offering a factual piece of Edwardian provenance. Fitting perfectly into a catalogue of 19th-century regional British topography and local history, this true first printing is notably scarce on the open market compared to later 20th-century print-on-demand facsimiles, making surviving copies in original bindings highly desirable for collectors of early pedestrian travelogues. Before the era of widespread railways and motorcars, the Reverend Thomas Grierson set out on foot to document the rugged grandeur of the Scottish Highlands.ÂAutumnal Rambles Among the Scottish Mountains chronicles his extensive pedestrian journeys between 1840 and 1849, offering vivid, firsthand accounts of climbing the Merrick, traversing Glen Rosa in Arran, and exploring the Isle of Skye. Filled with topographical detail and practical observations, this engaging travelogue remains an invaluable resource for enthusiasts of early Scottish mountaineering and Victorian regional history.
