Añadir al carritoA collection of 25 holograph and typed letters, post cards, and two Western Union notifications. The majority of letters were penned by Romer, addressed to his mother, Dolly, with some 5 or 6 letters written by Dolly addressed to Romer; most are holographs. Over the course of his life, Romer wrote a slew of western novels, like…his father, and two prominent fishing books: "The Cruise of the Fisherman" and "The Fisherman Under the Southern Cross." The letters date from 1913 to 1954 with the bulk written in the 1920s and 1930s. The letter subjects are personal and wide-raging and include exploration, travel, fishing with his father, Zane, and family squabbles over personal ambitions and disagreements over parental supervision; for instance: [Romer writing to his mother on October 14, 1929] "But get this into your bean, I don't spend my money because Dad spends his, or to copy anyone else. Except for fishing and a few other ways he spends his in a two-bit fashion like a child. I would hardly care to imitate that." Ouch. Romer did conclude the letter with his continued devotion and love for this mother. There's a poignant and urgent letter written by Romer to his mother in 1937 after Zane suffered a stroke and the immediate need for medical care was paramount. The goal was to safely get him home under medical supervision. The group of letters in generally very good condition with light soiling to a few and most with their mailing envelopes. In this family, like most families, love and devotion is paramount, subject to the capriciousness and whims of personal ambition.

Añadir al carritoPurple ink on ruled paper, with numerous corrections, several insertions in pencil. 3 pp. on two leaves, listing approximately 70 items. 1 vols. Folio. Fascinating log of Zane Grey's earnings from his outdoor writings, beginning in 1908 and listing articles in Field & Stream, the New York Times Book Review, Recreation, Country G…entleman, Outdoor Life, and others. The list was compiled or updated by his wife Dolly (née Lina Roth), circa 1932: the leaf headed Misc. Short Stories mentions a payment from Paramount in that year. The IRS famously pursued the Greys for back taxes, claiming that the couple were not a business partnership and therefore had claimed erroneous business expenses. In a letter to her husband (21 March 1927) when he was in New Zealand, Dolly wrote, "I was figuring the other day, darling. Recently, your earnings went over $2,000,000. Quite a lot to get out of that old head of yours, isn't it? I suppose most people would consider just that material fact of money a wonderful achievement. But I'm considering what's behind it - what it means. It means that you are a tremendous factor for happiness, & pleasure, & uplift in the lives of thousands of people. If that isn't greatness, and success, what is?" A notable item of Zane Grey interest. Marginal chipping, old folds. Fine Purple ink on ruled paper, with numerous corrections, several insertions in pencil. 3 pp. on two leaves, listing approximately 70 items. 1 vols. Folio.
