Sidney and Dyer, began to write in the 1580s and whose Workes (1633) were published posthumously in the same year as Donnes. Two important verse treatises excluded from that collection were issued as The Remains (1670). A Treatise of Religion had been suppressed in 1633, its omission accounting for the twenty-two missing pages in the Workes. There had apparently been no plan to include A Treatise of Monarchy; even in 1681 it was to strike Richard Baxter as presenting doctrines 'which I greatly wonder this Age would bear. These Treatises have been available only in Southeys British Poets (1831) and in Grosarts Fuller Worthies Library (1870), both deriving from the inaccurate 1670 edition. Green cloth covered boards with decorative stamping in blind and gilt titling to cover; illustrated with nine plates and one folded plate as frontispiece. Rubbing to spine ends with a 14 x 5 mm chip to tail of spine edge of front cover. Starting to front joint at both head and tail, but it appears that the tail split has been repaired with glue. Light bumping and light wear to corners of boards. Splitting along both front and rear hinges. Dampstaining along tail of front and rear endpapers, but not to text or plates. Some foxing to initial and final pages. All plates intact with two of them still possessing their tissue guards. Overall a fairly decent copy of a scarce telling of the story of the Dole of Tichborne, which has been illustrated by the half-cousin of Charles Darwin. . Hard Cover. Good.…

The leather is somewhat scuffed, spotting to text. With the armorial bookplate of the Earl of Suffolk and Berkshire to FEP, and an A.L.S. from the author at Dropmore House, dated 4th May 1829, bound in facing the title, and manuscript corrections to the text to D2r, G4r&v, H2r, I1r, L2r, L4r&v, M1v and M3r. A rare collection, privately printed and with a presentation note addressed to E.A. Barker, described within as 'a scholar', of poetic 'trifles' in neo-Latin, Greek and English, by William Wyndham Grenville, 1st Baron Grenville (1759-1834). As the author, a Tory politician who presided over a short lived Ministry which nevertheless secured the Abolition of the Slave Trade, explains in his preface, the 'following trifles, written at very different periods of the Author's life.were attempted as translations, others as paraphrases only, or still more distant imitations of the poetry to which they refer: the very few original pieces are entirely occasional'.
