Dark brown cloth with beveled board edges; light rubbing; cloth loss at frayed spine head so that it is fairly even with text block's top edge; lesser fraying at spine heel; mild scuffing along bottom board edges with some wear at all corner tips; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains bright. Gilt top edge; toning to fore-edge and bottom edge. Minimalist floral decoration to endpapers; pencil note at top of front free endpaper "also from W.D. Howell's library." Title page has antiquarian ink ownership signature at top right "J.A. Howells" with bottom right corner having initials "W.D.H." in same ink and handwriting. A few foxing spots and light toning to interior pages which are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. A very good- copy. A likely familial association to author and literary critic William Dean Howells (1837-1920) with J.A. Howells probably being William's brother Joseph Alexander Howells, 1832-1912, who was printer and editor of the Ashtabula [Ohio] Sentinel newspaper. Book was acquired from a Madison, Mississippi estate with no further provenance known.
