Este libro explora la obra de artistas que trataron de mantener las expandidas posibilidades que se habían abierto para la pintura y la escultura a través de lo que se llamó el cubismo en París, entre 1911 y 1914. Esta pequeña comunidad de artistas se negó a trabajar en otro registro y a producir propaganda bélica. Rechazaron olvidar el entusiasmo de 1911-14, y mantuvieron la fe en su independencia como individuos, en una primera guerra tecnológica y mecanicista que amenazó con privar a cada soldado de primera línea de su propia humanidad, condenando, incluso a los extranjeros, a una guerra total . La gran mayoría de los jóvenes franceses se movilizaron, por lo que los artistas que permanecían en París eran o extranjeros, o demasiado viejos, o no aptos para el combate.
