Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. 356pp. Historical account of America during the mid 19th Century, seen through the eyes of a top-ranked military official. Greely served with Company B, 19th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War. He wrote of his experiences with African American units, battles in which he fought and political and social observations viewed during his life. Greely was most famous as the leader of the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition in the Arctic from 1881 to 1884 Of Greely's 25-man crew, 19 perished from starvation, drowning, hypothermia, and in one case, gunshot wounds from an execution ordered by Greely. Greely and the other survivors were themselves near death; one of the survivors died on the homeward journey. The returning survivors were venerated as heroes, though the heroism was tainted by sensational accusations of cannibalism during the remaining days of low food. Greely received the Medal of Honor. First edition. Small blemish on front cover, very light rubbing to tips of spine and corners, otherwise a very good copy. Not in Dornbush.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. This small volume is a catalogue of the literature relating to the war for the union. As described in the preface, "It appears that the attention of American military officers is being directed, to a greater extent than ever before, to the professional lessons that may be obtained from a study of the literature relating to the war for the Union. The time has also arrived when certain lines of military history have been so fully collected that data relative to the names of the publications and their presence in this Library are most desirable, both as a relief to the Library force in connection with visitors, and also as a benefit to the Army at large and other applicants from a distance." The entries are organized alphabetically by state. This book is in good condition, with some wear and staining to the fabric covers. There is also a small dent in the top of the front cover. In addition, the first two fly leaves are torn at the bottom, but this does not affect any of the text. There is some slight cracking to the front hinge. The back fly leaf has what appears to be a name written in pencil. The book also features beautiful marbled page edges.
