Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Tight, unmarked; This book was written by workers on the question of Canada's entering the second depression. Their dismay at finding another generation of young Canadians faced with the same prospects of unemployment, prompted them to compile an outline of world and national development leading…to recurring crises in private enterprise systems. The authors have used a historical materialist approach in attempting to make the history and background of depressions understandable to the average working class reader.

Owner's name and inscription to FFEP. Speckled ink stains to end papers and front matter. Small stain to back of front cover. 'This is a history of the e…volution of financial power in the United States since 1900. It shows to what extent this vial power became concentrated, what sort of men wielded in, what instruments of conquest they used, and what were the economic and social effects of their preeminence in American life. In a sense the book is the story of Wall Street and all that it (and the other nuclei of financial power) represented. In another sense it is the story of the American upper class. In another, broader sense it is the story of the economic changes which led inevitably to the crash of 1929 and the lean years of the ninteen-thirties [sic]: the story of how we reached the plight we are now in.'.

[++ There is a significant amount of thinking that went into this thin publication, with Franklin clearly moving in the direction of federal and regional (and local) help and aid and care for the "migrant" folks living in a mobile world "on the edge of existence". This is a caring and thoughtful appraisal of the migration of "our destitute citizens".

Green-blue publisher's cloth, gilt lettering front cover & spine, red topstain as issued (slight shelfwear), w/ d.j. Art Deco cover art of boy & girl tramps jumping into railcars (minor chipping foot of spine, darkening to spine, slight edgwear, old tape repair…s), still NF/VG- copy. First edition, 2nd printing, of this gritty travel memoir, and sociological study examining the impact of the Great Depression upon teenagers, and even children as young as 10 years-old swelling the ranks of perhaps homeless and tramp youth wandering across the United States in the early 1930's. Minehan while a professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota disguised himself in shabby clothes, and lived on the road for over three years, observing 1465 girls and boys under 18, interviewed nearly 1000, and compiled 499 case histories, with the vast majority never finishing more than 8th grade, or 2 years of high school. He then issued this brutal and frank assessment of young women forced into prostitution as homeless nonprofits largely targeted males, and young boys; examined the impacts of societal aversion to homosexuality which frequently resulted in young people expelled from their homes, with over 10% young women (interesting fact in his tables was that while 20-30% of boys still liked their parents, no such affection was expressed by the young women). Despite the introduction of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and other similar New Deal programs, many of the child tramps remained defiant, including one called "Texas" who railed that "I can't get into the CCC because I have no dependents. I can't remain in any state unless I go to a slave camp. What chance have I got?" Uncommon in original dustjacket.

Añadir al carritoALS. 2pgs. February 2, 1932. Lyndon Center, Vermont. An autograph letter signed Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith and addressed to his parents. Writing during the Great Depression, Smith, who was probably a student at the Lyndon Institute boarding school, regrets that he cannot come home for the weekend due to a lack of money but inst…ructs his parents not to send more on his behalf: Dear Mother and Dad, I had a dandy little day, or as dandy as could be expected in a place like this. I got a spauling of sixteen apiece and that was just about 160 whacks too much. I am going to tell you that I am sorry that I will have to stay up here over the weekend because my financial standing is not to allow me to come home but dont think anything is wrong it is only the depression and I will be able to make arrangements to stay here because one of my pals is staying here and I can stay with him. Dont send me any more money to come home on because Ill see if I can help out by not spending any more money than I have to. Write again soon and tell me what you think of it. I have paid all my bills and I will be able to make out O.K. Write soon. Much Love Your 16 yr old Son Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith (Amos) (Budge) (Smith). Roosevelt"). Printed return address has been elided on both stationery and envelope ("Beatrice Donley / Morgantown, WV"); mild toning and wear; envelope d…arkened - Very Good and complete. Mrs. Donley writes asking President Roosevelt to intervene in a pending foreclosure by the Second National Bank of Morgantown (WV). After listing her and her husbands assets, which include a large candy factory, she concludes, ".Please make some arrangements with the Receiver of the Bank Mrs. Cassidy, Morgantown W.Va. so I will have some place to live / Yours Truly / Mrs. O.O. Donley." The author's husband, Orris Otto Donley, a Morgantown businessman, appears in contemporary newspaper accounts as the perpetrator of an $80,000 embezzlement against his uncle's estate, a fact not mentioned in Mrs. Donley's letter. Millions of similar messages were sent by desperate citizens to the White House in the years of the Great Depression, often, as here, in a last-ditch attempt to forestall homelessness. A collection of such letters, edited by Robert McIlvaine, was published in 1986 by the University of North Carolina Press under the title Down and Out in the Great Depression: Letters from the Forgotten Man. Signed.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. A scarce depression-era map of Oklahoma, with graphic advertisements to the verso showing the range of automobile-centric establishments in the state at the time. The map shows all the automobile routes of the time, with text along the borders listing the towns and the telephone numbers of various services…and lodging options. The instructions on the the top read "Put Out Your Fires / Leave a Clean Camp / Keep the Streams Pure / Don't Be a Road Hog." According to the single copy in OCLC, at the Denver Public Library, the map was printed in 1930, though we see no date on the map itself. The depression hit Oklahoma following the drought in 1930, which also coincided with the opening of the East Texas oil field. This map is a relic of the period just before the state's economic downturn, with the early automobile infrastructure still intact and vibrant. Folded map measuring 28 x 17 inches. Some small tears at folds, very good.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Overall excellent. A photo album of an unknown couple. Early shots include two tintypes which appear to be turn of the century to 1920s, and six real photo postcards, dating to the 1920s at the latest based on stampboxes. The RPPCs include portraits, shots from a farm, and a souvenir photo from Brooklyn. Later shots a…re likely WWII-era, showing several men posing in military uniforms. The album is highlighted by its photographs of Californian auto tourism and a Soap Box Derby event, likely also in California. Identifiable tourist locations include Bear Canyon Campground in Altadena and Cedarpines Park in the San Bernardino mountains; people pose with the car in deep snow and at the campside, and shots show the car with luggage strapped to the outside and filling up at a Shell. One Cedarpines photo is dated, captioned ?Winter ?28? Later auto tourism shots?with what appears to be a 1940s model car?show the car at a Los Angeles mechanic with a teardrop camper and a boat on top, and later parked at a beach with the camper set up, with manuscript verso indicating that the location is Mexico. Alongside these photographs is a shot of a Depression-era billboard reading ?NO JOBS in California / KEEP OUT / 6 MEN FOR EVERY JOB / NO STATE RELIEF AVAILABLE FOR NON-RESIDENTS?; on the verso, it is captioned ?1929 / This sign was posted in Tennessee? Soap Box Derby is a Depression-era invention, beginning in 1934 in Dayton, Ohio, and quickly becoming a national phenomenon. Derby shots in this album appear to be Californian or at least to highlight Californian entrants: the cars pictured are sponsored by Siminow Bros., a Los Angeles gas station and mechanic. These include the cars being towed in, the line for the inspection station, the starting line, and action shots. Highlighting two very different forms of car-based recreation, the album is of interest to historians of the car in American leisure in the period surrounding the Great Depression. Photo album measuring 7 x 10 inches containing fifty-three photographs: two tintypes (c. 1890s and 1920s), six RPPCs, and forty-five modern photographs. Photographs mainly measure 4 x 6 inches and smaller. Conditions vary; some with wrinkling and damage, especially to corners and edges; others Fine.

Añadir al carritoIn the mid-1930s, prolonged drought across the Great Plains, combined with falling agricultural prices, forced thousands of farm families into foreclosure and displacement. The crisis, central to what would become known as the Dust Bowl, led to widespread liquidation of farms and personal property, often through public auctions…held under distress conditions. Offered here is a stark press image documenting one such sale in Nebraska. The original caption reads in part: "This farm auction shop is typical of the mid-west where farmers, driven from their land by the drought, are forced to sell at auction their farm machinery, household effects in order to procure enough money to move to more fertile spots. The government is aiding the stricken farmers through loans and relief. It is thought that not less than 100,000 families may be moved from their farms by the government." The photograph shows the exterior of a "Sale Room," with equipment and household goods assembled for liquidation. Rothstein, working for the Resettlement Administration, produced some of the most widely circulated images of rural dislocation during the Depression. Images such as this were distributed through press agencies to illustrate both the severity of the crisis and the federal government's expanding role in relief and resettlement, and were reprinted later. This is an attractive original copy with fine contrast, with 1936 press markings verso. Minor edge wear and toning to caption, else very good. Press photograph, 8 x 10 inches, by Arthur Rothstein, distributed by International News Photos, with original caption on verso dated 1936.
