Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. Wanted Poster 20 x 20 cm. In acid free Mylar sleeve. Will be shipped flat between heavy cardboard layers, never rolled. Stein was arrested for the crime of "sus'' and the disposition is listed as "Pend." In 1930 "sus" meant the individual was arrested on suspicion of a crime rather than a specific charge. In the early 20th century, police routinely arrested people under vagrancy or "suspicion" laws to hold them at the station. This gave detectives time to interrogate them, take their fingerprints, and check if they matched any open cases. The "Disposition" line has the word "Pend" which stands for Pending, meaning the police were still investigating to see if they could officially charge him with a specific crime. The term "sus" became famous in England via the "Sus Law" (officially Section 4 of the Vagrancy Act 1824), which allowed police to arrest anyone they suspected was a loiterer or frequenting a space with intent to commit a felony. Ted S. Stein was picked up by the Akron police simply because he looked suspicious or fit the description of an ongoing investigation, and they were holding him while they figured out what to do next. Because his crime was listed as "Sus." (Suspicion) and the disposition was "Pend." (Pending), it is very likely that he was released without ever being formally charged or arraigned. Investigative "vagrancy" and "suspicion" detentions during this era rarely resulted in a permanent criminal trial record unless further evidence was uncovered. On the front side of the card, the entire Criminal History table is blank. This indicates that at the time of his arrest in July 1930, the Ohio State Bureau of Criminal Identification had no prior criminal records, aliases, or past convictions on file for him. His nationality is listed as "Am Hebrew" (American Hebrew) and born in Pennsylvania circa 1895. [Recto: Image 1] OHIO STATE BUREAU OF CRIMINAL IDENTIFICATION AND INVESTIGATION Address: P. O. Owner's name and inscription to FFEP. Speckled ink stains to end papers and front matter. Small stain to back of front cover. 'This is a history of the evolution of financial power in the United States since 1900. It shows to what extent this vial power became concentrated, what sort of men wielded in, what instruments of conquest they used, and what were the economic and social effects of their preeminence in American life. In a sense the book is the story of Wall Street and all that it (and the other nuclei of financial power) represented. In another sense it is the story of the American upper class. In another, broader sense it is the story of the economic changes which led inevitably to the crash of 1929 and the lean years of the ninteen-thirties [sic]: the story of how we reached the plight we are now in.'.…

Art Deco cover art of boy & girl tramps jumping into railcars (minor chipping foot of spine, darkening to spine, slight edgwear, old tape repairs), still NF/VG- copy. First edition, 2nd printing, of this gritty travel memoir, and sociological study examining the impact of the Great Depression upon teenagers, and even children as young as 10 years-old swelling the ranks of perhaps homeless and tramp youth wandering across the United States in the early 1930's. Minehan while a professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota disguised himself in shabby clothes, and lived on the road for over three years, observing 1465 girls and boys under 18, interviewed nearly 1000, and compiled 499 case histories, with the vast majority never finishing more than 8th grade, or 2 years of high school. He then issued this brutal and frank assessment of young women forced into prostitution as homeless nonprofits largely targeted males, and young boys; examined the impacts of societal aversion to homosexuality which frequently resulted in young people expelled from their homes, with over 10% young women (interesting fact in his tables was that while 20-30% of boys still liked their parents, no such affection was expressed by the young women). Despite the introduction of the Civilian Conservation Corps, and other similar New Deal programs, many of the child tramps remained defiant, including one called "Texas" who railed that "I can't get into the CCC because I have no dependents. I can't remain in any state unless I go to a slave camp. What chance have I got?" Uncommon in original dustjacket. …

Writing during the Great Depression, Smith, who was probably a student at the Lyndon Institute boarding school, regrets that he cannot come home for the weekend due to a lack of money but instructs his parents not to send more on his behalf: Dear Mother and Dad, I had a dandy little day, or as dandy as could be expected in a place like this. I got a spauling of sixteen apiece and that was just about 160 whacks too much. I am going to tell you that I am sorry that I will have to stay up here over the weekend because my financial standing is not to allow me to come home but dont think anything is wrong it is only the depression and I will be able to make arrangements to stay here because one of my pals is staying here and I can stay with him. Dont send me any more money to come home on because Ill see if I can help out by not spending any more money than I have to. Write again soon and tell me what you think of it. I have paid all my bills and I will be able to make out O.K. Write soon. Much Love Your 16 yr old Son Arthur Merrill Oliver Smith (Amos) (Budge) (Smith). Añadir al carritoFirst Edition. ALS, 18 lines (ca 75 words) on a single sheet of printed stationery, 10" x 7". Original mailing envelope included (unposted, addressed simply "Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt"). Printed return address has been elided on both stationery and envelope ("Beatrice Donley / Morgantown, WV"); mild toning and wear; envelope darkened - Very Good and complete. Mrs. Donley writes asking President Roosevelt to intervene in a pending foreclosure by the Second National Bank of Morgantown (WV). After listing her and her husbands assets, which include a large candy factory, she concludes, ".Please make some arrangements with the Receiver of the Bank Mrs. Cassidy, Morgantown W.Va. so I will have some place to live / Yours Truly / Mrs. O.O. Donley." The author's husband, Orris Otto Donley, a Morgantown businessman, appears in contemporary newspaper accounts as the perpetrator of an $80,000 embezzlement against his uncle's estate, a fact not mentioned in Mrs. Donley's letter. Frank Kettlewell (1890-1969) was a long-time staff cartoonist and art director for the Oakland Tribune. Añadir al carrito12 ½ x 18 ¾ sheet. Condición: Some wrinkles; near fine. A broadside soliciting advertisers for Condé Nast's publications Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, and The American Golfer. Printed following the 1929 crash, the broadside's tactic is to portray Condé Nast magazines' readers as the people who stay rich, or get even richer, during times of economic upheaval: the "Successful Class [which] profits first" because it contains the "ablest, the most ingenious, and the most ambitious people in the land." "The time has come", the broadside advises, "to re-sell themhard." We find no copies of this broadside in OCLC.…

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. A scarce depression-era map of Oklahoma, with graphic advertisements to the verso showing the range of automobile-centric establishments in the state at the time. The map shows all the automobile routes of the time, with text along the borders listing the towns and the telephone numbers of various services and lodging options. The instructions on the the top read "Put Out Your Fires / Leave a Clean Camp / Keep the Streams Pure / Don't Be a Road Hog." According to the single copy in OCLC, at the Denver Public Library, the map was printed in 1930, though we see no date on the map itself. The depression hit Oklahoma following the drought in 1930, which also coincided with the opening of the East Texas oil field. This map is a relic of the period just before the state's economic downturn, with the early automobile infrastructure still intact and vibrant. Folded map measuring 28 x 17 inches. Some small tears at folds, very good.…
