Edited and designed by J. Abbott Miller, the volume centres on an interview conducted by Grace Mirabella with the designer, in which Beene sets out his working principles of minimal seams, minimal weight and minimal detail, and is interleaved with texts by Franz Kafka. Photographs are contributed by Josef Astor, Jack Deutsch, Andrew Eccles, Guzman, Hiro, William Laxton and Herb Ritts. The catalogue documents the exhibition's survey of Beene's work from 1983 onward, the year he became the sole owner of his company, and records garments shown at the Museum: evening dresses in silk crepe, metallic silk satins, velvet and lace; a 1989 black evening dress with a nude figure rendered in gold; a royal-purple sequinned football-jersey gown from fall-winter 1967-68; and a fall 1972 gown printed with a highway, clouds and grass. In English.
