French General…who was one of the leading figures in the history of French Colonization, having distinguished himself in the French Sudan, Mauritania, Chad and Morocco. During World War 1, Gouraud distinguished himself in Argonne (where he lost an arm), the Dardanelles and Champagne. In 1923 he became the Military Governor of Paris.
