"Denna samling är nr 1 i serien med Carl Franzéns uppteckningar." - - - (Baksidestext:) "Carl Franzén föddes 1881 och växte upp som skeppar- och småbrukarson i Hellvi på norra Gotland. Han övertog småningom jordbruket och var 1932-60 även socknens poststationsföreståndare. Ungefär samtidigt ägnade han också åtskilligt med tid åt att besvara en lång räcka frågor Nordiska Museet i Stockholm resp Landsmålsarkivet i Uppsala skickade ut landet runt. Svaren utgår främst från Hellvi och socknarna däromkring, men har stor allmängiltighet för hela Gotlands dåtida landsbygd. Sammanlagt blev det över 300 svarsmanuskript på mellan 1 och drygt 30 sidor och mängder med anteckningar. På ett utförligt sätt skildras områdets liv och arbete, boende, nöjen och vardag mängd sammanhang. Dessutom skrev han många andra hembygdsbetonade artiklar och skissade möjligen på materialet till en sockenbok. Franzén kom därigenom att utföra ett betydande arbete med uppteckningar av sakförhållanden och berättelser; ibland presenterade i sammanfattad form, ibland med sagesmännens egna ord och ofta även med goda illustrationer av olika föremål. Materialet fyller på många sätt en stor lucka mellan PA Säves och Th Erlandssons kända uppteckningar. Sen dess har materialet emellertid i stort sett legat outgivet, endast tillgängligt för forskare etc. Med föreliggande urval - som belyser arbete, lön och boende för 'småfolket' vid kalkugnar, kalkbrott och bondgårdar kring förra sekelskiftet - vill vi både hylla Franzéns gärning och förse en intresserad allmänhet med ett rikt och givande material".
