London: William Heinemann, (1948). Original red cloth lettered in silver, with dust jacket. First Edition of Maugham's last novel, published two months before the American one. Set in Spain during the Inquisition, it told of a crippled girl to whom the Blessed Virgin appears in a vision. She will be healed by one of three brothe…rs, the one who has best served God. One brother is a bishop, another is a soldier, and the third is a baker. It comes as no surprise that the humble panadero succeeds in healing the girl. In the slackness of the writing, the descent into cliche, and the contrived plot devices, CATALINA betrayed Maugham's declining powers. [It] was a feeble book with which to end a fifty-year career as a novelist. [Morgan] This copy has its lettering in silver (the publisher started out using silver but finding it unsatisfactory switched to imitation gold -- "both variations were delivered to the bookshops simultaneously"). It is a fine, bright copy; the colorful jacket, with a wraparound pictorial scene by Gordon Nicoll, is nearly fine as well (spine a bit faded, front flap price-clipped). Toole Stott A67a. Nicoll, Gordon (ilustrador).

Modern 3/4 leather over original marbled boards, marbled page ends, marbled endpapers. Foxing and minor toning. In 1721, Bailey published the first first monolingual English di…ctionaries to focus on defining words in common usage, rather than just difficult words. Bailey's Dictionarium Britannicum (1730 and 1736) was the primary resource mined by Samuel Johnson for his Dictionary of the English Language (1755). The "Scott-Bailey" or "Bailey-Scott" dictionary, contains relatively slight revisions by Scott, but mostly plagiarizes Johnson's own dictionary. "The attempt of the Bailey proprietors to enter a folio to rival Johnson's great Dictionary remained alive through 1772, three years after Scott's death." See Starnes & Noyes, chapt. 1920s VISIT LONDON TRAVEL BY TRAIN - BRITISH RAILWAYS.A very fine example of this striking Original vintage travel poster presents a ceremonial procession of the Household Cavalry riding through the heart of London, with the Victoria Memorial and Buckingham Palace forming a majestic backdrop. The poster was produced as part of th…e Visit London andndash; See Britain by Rail campaign, commissioned by British railway companies in the early twentieth century. These posters were displayed in stations and travel offices in Britain, Europe, and North America, promoting rail travel as the most elegant and efficient way to experience the country. Rather than focusing on industry or speed, such designs emphasised tradition, culture, and visual splendour, positioning Britainandmdash;and London in particularandmdash;as a place of ceremony, history, and refinement.Gordon Nicoll (1888-1959, who created this artworkwas a Scottish-born illustrator and poster artist active primarily during the interwar period. He became well known for his work on railway and travel posters, where his strengths lay in strong draughtsmanship, clear narrative scenes, and an ability to convey atmosphere at a distanceandmdash;essential qualities for posters meant to be read at a glance. Nicoll frequently depicted ceremonial events, architecture, and iconic British imagery, blending realism with a subtly idealised, almost theatrical style.Nicolls work reflects the golden age of British travel posters, when commercial art reached a high level of artistic ambition. His posters were not only advertisements but also carefully composed images that shaped how Britain presented itself to the world: proud, orderly, historic, and visually impressive. Today, his designs are prized by collectors and institutions for both their aesthetic quality and their role in the visual history of modern tourism.Condition generally very fine and is linen backed. Overall size including the linen backing is 107 x 68cm and the poster itself is 102 x 63cm.
