Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Two kinds of long-term research are taking place at the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest, a renowned research facility in the temperate rain forest of the Oregon Cascades. Here, scientists investigate the ecosystem's trees, wildlife, water, and nutrients with an eye toward understanding change over varying timescales up to two hundred years or more. And writers from both literary and scientific backgrounds spend time in the forest investigating the ecological and human complexities of this remarkable and deeply studied place. This anthology-which includes work by some of the nation's most accomplished writers, including Sandra Alcosser, Alison Hawthorne Deming, Jane Hirshfield, Linda Hogan, Freeman House, Robin Wall Kimmerer, Kathleen Dean Moore, Robert Michael Pyle, Pattiann Rogers, and Scott Russell Sanders-grows out of the work of the Long-Term Ecological Reflections program and showcases the insights of the program's thoughtful and important encounters among writers, scientists, and place. These vivid essays, poems, and field notes convey a landscape of moss-draped trees, patchwork clear-cuts, stream-swept gravel bars, and hillsides scoured by fire, and also bring forward the ambiguities and paradoxes of conflicting human values and their implications for the ecosystem.Forest Under Story offers an illuminating and multifaceted way of understanding the ecology and significance of old-growth forests, and points the way toward a new kind of collaboration between the sciences and the humanities to better know and learn from special places. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carrito700 pages. Hardcover: H 17.25cm x L 13cm. Original binding - soft black leather spine with black cloth boards. Slender chipping at spine head, lettering still bright, some scuffing at heel and along joints; some staining to boards with worn corners. Toning to edges; foxing to endpapers; past owner's signature in antiquarian ink on front free endpaper traced over in pencil with additional pencil notation; some foxing and toning to interior leaves with scattered pencil marks. Binding is firm. A good+ copy but still a nicer one than usually found as school readers and primers usually suffered much abuse at the hands of youthful students.

Tall thick 12mo., orig. red cloth with decoration in gilt on both boards and the spine, xii, 561, (3)pp. ads, 16pp.ads. A bit of wear to the lower corners but o/w a near fine copy. BAL 7581 note. "This work was compiled by Hawthorne and his sister Elizabeth.the Hawthornes contributed little of their own to the compilation.it seems conclusive that the Universal History was tailor-made, that very little in it can be safely labelled as Hawthorne's work or thought. It has been placed in the Hawthorne canon only because he and his sister were associated with it, but it represents nothing more than a piece of hack work accomplished by extracting materials from Parley books and other works easily available." Añadir al carritoCondición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: dj. First edition. First printing of this educational survey that combines advice on screenwriting and directing with the scenario scripts for the films "A Kiss for Cinderella," "The Last Command," and "The Scarlet Letter." "Patterson was one of the earliest university lecturers on motion pictures," notes the Women Film Pioneers Project; for her, "the writer, and not the director, was the guiding vision behind a film." This is clear in MOTION PICTURE CONTINUITIES, where she emphasizes the aesthetic composition of the scenes and placements of the actors within a shot. Her career is ripe for further study, as her "desire to teach in adult-education and outreach programs" was "rarely recognized as important by chroniclers of university history" (Women Film Pioneers Project). 7.5'' x 4.75''. Original red cloth binding. Original unclipped ($3.00) pictorial dust jacket. Black-and-white pictorial frontispiece with three black-and-white plates. x, [4], 246 pages. Jacket with some edgewear and a bit of rubbing. One tiny spot of soil to fore-edge. Clean and bright. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.
