Auch im Atelier seiner Lebensgefährtin, der Malerin Greta Freist (1904-93) verkehrend, wurde er mit Schriftstellern wie Otto Basil oder Elias Canetti bekannt. 1936 nach Paris übersiedelt, wurde er zu Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs interniert, 1944/45 hatte er unter Repressalien der deutschen Besatzer zu leiden.
