Contemporary burgundy coloured half-calf over marbled boards, gilt lettering stamped on spine (wear to corners & spine, minor splitting to lower fore-edge front cover, occasional light… foxing & toning), still a VG- copy, w/ publisher's presentation inscription on ffep. to Dr. Samuel Colhoun (1786?-1841), professor of Material Medica at Jefferson Medical College, and later Dean. First edition of this companion to Goddard's earlier Plates of the Cerebro-Spinal Nerves (1837), with the plates well-executed, and very popular with American medical schools of the period. Goddard (1811-1866) was a professor of anatomy at Franklin Medical College of Philadelphia, and practicing surgeon and physician, but is perhaps best remembered as becoming the first in 1839 to use bromide for developing daguerreotype photographs greatly reducing exposure times, and later setting up a commercial photography studio with Robert Cornelius (1809-1893), photographer for the earliest self-portrait in the U.S. taken in 1839. Sinclair (1805?-1881) was a Philadelphia lithographer who acquired the press of John Collins in 1838, and noted as one of the first Philadelphia lithographers to experiment with colour lithography, producing the first tinted lithograph in 1843.
