Two rotating wheels each showing hemisphere projection maps, which are attached to a thick brown base, w/ printed labels on front cover, original rivets still present, printed paper label and instructions on verso (some rubbing & edgewear, minor foxing & scuffing), still a G exemplar. First editio…n of this fascinating and scarce global map which allows the user to view steamship, or airline distance routes, as well as the principal railroads. The global map was designed so that opposite halves of the earth's surface could be rotated and synchronized enabling continuous and accurate spherical relationships across any point on the rotating maps. The label on the back lists the area in square miles, and population totals of the world. The map is dated to around 1941 because of the inclusion of Vichy France, the government allowed by the Nazi occupiers after the fall of France in 1940.

Añadir al carritoNo. 116 OF 150 COPIES. 632 x 250 mm. (25 x 9 3/4"). 2p.l., 19 [1] pp. Black quarter buckram over maroon marbled paper boards, spine lettered in gilt. In a custom maroon buckram clamshell box. WITH 24 FACSIMILE GLOBE GORES. Signed by Woodward on the limitation page. Just a hint of use to the box, booklet corners just a touch rubb…ed, otherwise as new. This sizable, attractive publication reproduces one of the largest complete sets of 16th century globe gores. Dating from around 1574, the original gores, which, when assembled, would make a globe measuring just under 70 centimeters in diameter, have been attributed to brothers Livio and Giulio Sanuto, Venetian cartographers and engravers. Little is known about the gores' origin; the accompanying essay suggests they may have never made it to the final stages of publication and production, possibly stopped by an outbreak of plague. This facsimile was created from the only extant set, in the collection of Arthur Holzheimer (1932-2025), and was produced by his research foundation, along with the Newberry Library. The gores are accompanied by a booklet by noted cartography scholar David Woodward (1942-2004), which provides background and the evidence supporting the attribution of the gores to the Sanuto brothers.

Añadir al carritoOne mammoth sized reverse glass albumen photo, 14 x 22.2 in., photographer's imprint w/in negative at lower corner, in contemporary decorative Arts & Crafts frame (very minor tidemark faintly darkening upper left corner), wooden frame w/ minor scuffing, a VG exemplar w/ bright strong contrast. Baker's Art Gallery first founded b…y Lorenzo Baker (1834-1924) during the Civil War produced innumerable family portraits, commercial images, photographs of famous people, and during the 1890's a series of reverse glass albumen mammoth images. In this image the globe being studied by the young pair appears to be an 18 inch Rand McNally terrestrial globe, with the young boy seated atop the desk, and a Renaissance revival chair behind the flowing gown of the young girl. The others marketed from about 1896-1900 included a mother and two daughters, "The Recital," and another image of young girl with mother painting and holding an artist's palette, all seemingly with same models. Celebrities who sat for the Bakers, included Annie Oakley, Presidents Rutherford B. Hayes, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and Warren G. Harding. Four generations of the Baker family operated the studio in Columbus until 1955, when the studio closed, and family donated negatives and photographs to the Ohio History Center.

Añadir al carritoDiameter globes: 12 inches / 30,5 cm. Total height: 27,5 inches / 70 cm. Full titles: Newton's New and Improved Terrestrial Globe Embracing every recent Discovery to the Present Time. Manufactured by Newton & Son, 66 Chancery Lane. London, Published Jan: 1st, 1841. Newton's New and Improved Celestial Globe On which all the Stars… Nebulae and Clusters contained in the extensive Catalogue of the late F. Woolaston F.R.S. are accurately laid down, their Right Ascensions and Declinat[ions] having been recalculated for the Year 1830, by W. Newton. Manufactured by Newton and Son, Chancery Lane. London Published Jan 1st 1841. The Terrestrial globe: This globe consists of twelve copperplate, original hand coloured varnished gores, expertly crafted onto the papier-mache globe itself. Gores are the printed panels with curved sides that taper to a point at each end, making up a surface of the globe. They are designed to give a complete three-dimensional map when cut and adhered to the globe. The paper horizon ring shows the months of the year, and the days within each month, plus stars and constellations, along with the names of the zodiac. The globe has a brass hour circle fitted above the north pole. By turning this thin, small metal circle (divided evenly into 24 segments), you can calculate the time difference between various locations on the globe. The globe also features a fully metal graduated meridian ring - a ring that arches 360 degrees around the globe and passes over the two poles. The ring is quartered in four by 90-degree quadrants and constellations. Straddling the equator circle, in the Pacific Ocean region, you will find the Analemma. The Analemma extends between the points 23.5 north and 23.5 south only, or between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer. The region between these lines is known as the tropics. The Sun's rays do not fall vertically outside the tropics. The globe sits above a three-legged mahogany tripod, with a turned base and delightful and elegant tapered feet. The title of the globe is found in the North Pacific Ocean. The globe has an attractive patina because of its age, and is in full original hand colour. Some regions of the world are coloured in a muted green, but for the most part an off-white colour is seen. Some political and country borders are delineated by a thin pale red line. The United States is divided into East and West via the Mississippi River. Mexico extends northwards into Texas, New Mexico and California. Many native American Indian tribal lands are mentioned: Snake Indians, Chepawans, StrongBow (Canada), Fall Indians, Assimboins, Hare Indians (Canada). Old place names are evident in Canada and the United States - many betray the Spanish presence in Mexico at the time; New Norfolk, New Albion, New Navarre, New Madrid, New Leon, New Biscay, to name a few. Condition: The wooden horizon ring has a papered surface, has one restored, diagonal cut, and split. There is some notable surface loss to gores just to the west of Peru in South America, and in the South Pacific Ocean - near to the Analemma. There is black vertical scarring to parts of what would be California and British Columbia in Western Canada. The Celestial globe: The paper horizon ring shows the months of the year, and the days within each month, plus stars and constellations, along with the names of the zodiac. This globe also sits on an identical three-legged mahogany tripod, with a turned base and has the delightful and elegant tapered feet. This globe also has an attractive pale patina because of its age. The globe is beautifully varnished, and in general uncoloured, but on closer inspection, you can detect some original applied colour. The title of the globe is to be found just above the Tropic of Cancer, close by a scale of the magnitude of stars. Celestial globes show the apparent positions of the stars in the sky. They omit the Sun, Moon, and planets because the positions of these bodies vary relative to those of the stars, but the ecliptic, along which the Sun moves, is indicated. Condition: The globe is in remarkably good condition, with very few flaws or blemishes. There is one distinct diagonal split or crack to the horizon ring, at December. There is some minor discolouration to the top of the gores that are under the brass hour circle at the North Pole. Seen and displayed as a pair of matching table globes, these are very handsome indeed. Beautifully made and produced by one of the premier globe makers of the 19th-century in England. They would be a fine addition to any academic institution, or make a welcome addition to any home or library into which they were placed.

Añadir al carritoNewton's new & improved terrestrial and celestial globes The diameter of the globes is 2.75 inches (7 cm). The total height, including the stands, is 6.75 inches (15 cm). A beautiful pair of miniature desk globes, with 12 hand-colored engraved gores on plaster spheres, mounted to nineteenth-century calibrated brass meridian ring…s and carved wooden stands. The Terrestrial and celestial globes are made of carved wood and are in fine condition. The Newton family was among the foremost English globe makers of the early 19th century, producing globes of many sizes under various names. The origins of the firm began in the previous century, in fact, back to Nathaniel Hill, for it was he who taught the art of globe making to Thomas Bateman (fl.1754-1781), who in turn trained John Newton (1759-1844), who was the patriarch of the Newton firm. John began his firm in 1780, publishing a reissue of a Nathaniel Hill pocket globe in partnership with William Palmer. At the beginning of the 19th century, John Newton had located his business at 97 Chancery Lane in London and was quickly joined by his second son, William (1786-1861), under the name J.& W. Newton. For the decade between 1831 and 1841, Miles Berry, a civil engineer, became a member of the firm, known then as Newton, Son & Berry. After 1841, ownership passed to William Newton's eldest son, William Edward Alfred Vincent (1821-1900), who became associated with the firm, which continued in operation through future generations until the early years of the 20th century.

The Nuremberg mathematician, physicist, and astronomer Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677 1750), one of the most renowned natural scientists of his time, is the creator behind this pair of globes. No natural science collection of universal pretensions, such as a cabinet of curiosities or a magnificent baroque princely library, could be without such a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes. Towards the end of his studies at the University of Halle from 1700 to 1702, Doppelmayr undertook a study trip to England and the Netherlands, where he deepened his astronomy and lens-grinding knowledge. He achieved great international fame through his mathematical and astronomical writings and through the terrestrial and celestial globes, which he published in collaboration with the engraver Johann Georg Puschner (1680 1749) between 1718 and 1736. His scientific and publishing achievements were honored by memberships in the Royal Society in London and the Academies of Berlin and St. Petersburg. Condition: Original varnish on the two globes. Cleaned these, though. Retouched the top round axle of the celestial globe and refilled the place where the axles are in the globe.
