["BUFFALO SOLDIERS"]. First Edition. Black Cloth. 141pp.+4 plates at end. Illustrated. Charts. Lists. Map. Dedication. Foreword. Introduction. Preface. "This volume contains the history of the Tenth Cavalry from its organization to present date, so far as can be gleaned from reports, records and personal recollections. No effort has been made to elaborate on incidents, the aim being merely to present an accurate and brief record of the regiment." The Tenth Cavalry, as one of "four regiments of colored soldiers", was formed on July 28, 1866 in "the reorganization bill of 1866". Within the next year, its men were recruited by Colonel Benjamin H. Grierson at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. They were immediately put into service fighting hostile Cheyenne Indians in various parts of Kansas, and spearheading the rescue efforts to the men trapped after the Battle of Beecher Island. In April, 1869 they transferred to Oklahoma Territory where they literally built the famous Fort Sill. They dealt with hostile Comanche and Kiowa Indians for years until they participated in the highly successful Red River War in the Texas Panhandle in 1874-75. Their headquarters changed to Fort Concho, Texas for 7 long years, from which they launched a successful attack deep into Mexico against Lipan Apaches and Kickapoo Indians that had been raiding into Texas in 1876. In 1880 they campaigned against hostile Apaches under Victorio throughout the Texas and New Mexico borderlands, and again in 1885-86. They were transferred north to the Dakotas in 1892, eventually participating in the Spanish American War, The Philippines in 1907, and the Punitive Expedition into Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa in 1916. The Tenth Cavalry officially disbanded on March 10, 1944. This bright, attractive, fine copy is from the library of longtime Chaplain in the Tenth Cavalry and all 4 "colored regiments", Colonel Louis A. Carter. After studying at Tuskegee Institute and Selma University, receiving a bachelor's degree from Virginia Union University in divinity, and subsequents doctorates from Guadalupe College of Texas and Western University in Kansas. Carter began his 30 year Army career in April, 1910. He was the only chaplain to serve in all four historically black regiments: the 9th Cavalry, the 10th Cavalry, the 24th Infantry, and the 25th Infantry. Known to many as the "Shepard of Buffaloes", Carter was promoted to Colonel in 1936.the first black chaplain to achieve the rank. A great association for this fine copy of a rare regimental, limited to only 100 copies. Carter has neatly signed the book on the front pastedown endpaper, and has also neatly, signed the upper portion of the front free-endpaper: L. A. Carter Chaplain 25 Inf. Nogales, Ariz Oct 1921. Protected in a half-leather clamshell box with title in gilt on spine.
