[3], 95 (i.e. 97) ff., including engraved title with border as above by Valesio after Fialetti; 97 full-page engravings numbered to 95 (77 of them probably by and after J. Maurer, 20 by Valesio after Fialetti), explanatory text on verso; woodcut ornaments. [Bound after]: SPIEGEL, Adriaan van de [SPIGELIUS, Adrianus]. De Humani Corporis Fabrica Libri Decem. Edited by Daniel Bucretius. Venice: Evangelista Deuchinus, 1627. [12], 328 (i.e. 330), [12] pp., including engraved title with architectural border by F. Valesio after O. De formato foetu liber singularis aeneis figuris exornatus epistolae duae anatomicae. Tractatus de arthritide opera posthumastudio. . . Padua: Martini et Pasquati, (1626). [8], 104 pp., including 9 full-page engraved illustrations by Giulio Casserio, drawn and engraved by Odoardo Fialetti and Francesco Valesio, woodcut device on title-page. Signatures: a-b2 A-2C2. Three works in one volume. Folio (388 x 250 mm). Bound in 18th-century half calf and marbled paper over boards (rebacked). First two works are bound mixed up, beginning with the engraved title and the first 5 preliminary leaves including dedication, verses and index of Spiegel's De Humani Corporis Fabrica, followed by the preliminary appraisal leaf (a2) by Bucretius and the 97 plates of Casserio's Tabulae Anatomicae LXXIIX, followed by Spiegel's text, and ending with the engraved title of Casserio's work. First engraved title-leaf heavily soiled and remargined at gutter just touching plate, printed title with some abrasion; scattered soiling and light dampstaining. Provenance: a few early marginal notes, including one pointing out that the book was "published in the time of Charles the first" - gift inscription of R.B. Preble to Porter S. Dickinson, 25 December 1921. ---- FIRST EDITION OF THE THREE IMPORTANT ANATOMICAL WORK by Casserio and Spiegel which are often found together as here. Some copies of Casserio's Tabulae include an additional preliminary dedication leaf (a1) which is lacking here, as is the case with most copies in public libraries that are bound with the Spiegel parts. Our copy conforms in collation with the digitized University of Iowa copy (see Editions Medicina Rara, 1627). Pupil and successor to Fabricius ab Acquapendente in the Padua anatomy chair, Casserio (c. 1552-1616) and his pupil Adriaan van der Spiegel (1578-1625) are considered the last great anatomists in the Vesalian tradition. In all, the volume contains 2 allegorical title-frontispieces and 106 splendid copper-engraved anatomical plates which are considered to be among the most accurate and correct anatomical figures of the 17th century and which mark the end of woodcuts in scientific books: "Casserius's plates mark a new epoch in the history of anatomic representation, owing to the correctness of their anatomic drawing, their tasteful arrangement, and the beauty of their technical execution" (Choulant, p. 228). The set includes: the first edition of Casserio's anatomical tables, magnificently illustrated with. . . A very good, wide-margined copy in untouched binding of the time. ---- FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY DETAILED AND PENETRATING STUDIES IN COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. "Casserio began his career as the manservant of Girolamo Fabrici, who trained him in the art of dissection and encouraged him to pursue his medical studies; upon Fabrici's retirement in 1608, Casserio succeeded him in the chair of anatomy at the University of Padua. Like Fabrici, Casserio attempted to explain human anatomy by reference to the lower animals, and his De vocis, containing the first comparative studies of the vocal and auditory organs, represents one of the sixteenth century's most ambitious and detailed investigations in comparative anatomy. The work is divided into two treatises, on the anatomy of the larynx and on that of the ear. In the first, Casserio compared the human vocal apparatus to those of other mammals, birds, amphibians and even insects. He recognized the larynx to be the principal organ of voice, gave the first precise description of the cricoid-thyroid muscles and accurately depicted the superior and inferior laryngeal nerves, which he correctly assumed to originate from cranial nerves. He also was the first to understand the complex sound-producing organs on the abdomen of the cicada. In the second treatise, Casserio provided the first detailed comparative account of the auditory ossicles, the first adequate description of the mammalian osseous labyrinth, and the first representation of the ear of the fish - this last all the more remarkable in that, up to this time, no one had believed fishes to possess a sense of hearing. None of De vocis's full-page engravings, including the title engraving and portraits, are signed. The drawings for them have generally been attributed to the German painter and etcher Joseph Maurer, on the basis of a passage (cited in Choulant) in the treatise on the ear; however, recent research indicates that the engraved title and two portraits are most likely the work of Jacopo Ligozzi (1547-1626), who also illustrated specimens for the Bolognese naturalist Ulisse Aldrovandi" (Norman). "A masterpiece of book illustration and the most beautiful book ever published on the ear and throat in man and in lower animals". "Casseri . . . investigated the structure of the auditory and vocal organs in most of the domestic animals. The book includes a description of the larynx more accurate than that of any previous author" (Garrison-Morton). "Medical historians rank the accuracy and artistry of the illustrations in this and other works of Casserio in the same category as those of Vesalius, with Casserio setting the standard in copperplates as Vesalius had done with woodcuts" (Heirs of Hippocrates). Large folio (410 x 272 mm), [10], 3-346, [18] pp., including engraved title and 33 full-page engravings within page numbering. Signatures: a4 (A-2X)4 2Y6. Errata and colophon on 2Y6r. Contemporary vellum, spine and lower edge lettered in ink (head of spine chipped, extremities a bit rubbed). Housed in a custom-made clamshell box. Internally crisp and unmarked, with minor spotting in places; some brown ink smudges to upper- and fore-edge affecting outer margins of a few leaves, light dampstain to lower corner. Provenance: Michele Raby, Torino (large armorial bookplate to front pastedown). An outstanding copy in original binding and with ample margins of one of the rarest of all important 17th century anatomical works. ---- NLM/Krivatsy 2200; Waller 1810; not in Cushing, Osler, Wellcome, or Norman. - EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION of Casserius' second important contribution to the comparative anatomy not only of the ear and the vocal organs, as in his work of 1600/01, but also of the other four sense organs and especially of the EYE. This first edition of Pentaestheseion is much rarer than the Ferrara, 1601, De Vocis on the ear and voice, and in fact so rare that Choulant-Frank never saw a copy. They note: "The original edition is said to have contained a copper-title and thirty-three plates.," and proceed to describe the Frankfurt edition of 1622, with the same number of plates but "reduced and certainly executed by another artist. Some of them are even reversed and show much inferior workmanship" (p. 224). The very fine anatomical plates for which this book is noted are both drawn and engraved by the Swiss artist Joseph Maurer, a pupil of Tobias Stimmer who lived in Casserius' house. The 12 plates pertaining to the ear are the same as those of Casserius' earlier work; they constitute "the first accurate pictorial presentation of the internal ear" (Lyle M. Sellers, Annals of Otology, LXVIII, No. 3, Sept. 1959). Those dealing with the other four sense organs are new. Among them, in the especially important section dealing with the EYE and VISION (pp. 257-346) are the first pictorial representations of the conjunctival glands, later known as the Meibomian glands (cf. Garrison-Morton 1481). All the plates, according to Choulant-Frank, "are done with unusual care and are anatomically exact." Casserius' anatomy of the sense organs is of great importance in medical history, since for the first time he adds to a complete account of each human organ a full study of the same organ in various animal forms. Añadir al carrito2 parts in 1 volume. Beautiful first edition of a ground-breaking work on the anatomy of the vocal and auditory organs, written by the well-known anatomist and surgeon Giulio Casserio (1561?-1616). It was his first publication and contains 2 separate treatises that were issued together, the first on the anatomy of the larynx and the second on hearing and the anatomy of the ear. Although the colophon of the first part is dated 1601 and that of the second part 1600, the second treatise also refers to observations made in 1601. "As did many of the anatomists who preceded him, Casseri followed Galen, noting that the first part of his own method was the true anatomical method, the one Galen treated in the first book and the first passage of De usu partium" (Klestinec). Casserio made some important contributions to the science of the anatomy of the sense organs, particularly the vocal and auditory organs. He based much of his work on zoötomic research and many of the 34 large and beautifully designed engravings show zoötomic subjects, including the vocals organs of a grasshopper, a dog, a rat and a frog. His research covered both the superficial and deep muscles and includes the first precise description of the two cricothyroid muscles. With 3 owners' inscriptions at the foot of the title page, 2 struck through but partly legible and the third reading "ex libri Francisci Ardinone". With some marginal worm holes and a water stain in the gutter margin of the first 3 preliminary quires and an occasional leaf with browned patches, but still a good copy and with large margins. The binding has some stains, minor abrasions, and repairs to the upper part of the spine, but is also still good. An important and magnificent medical work with spectacular anatomical engravings.l Garrison & Morton 286; Krivatsky 2199; LeFanu, Notable medical books (1976), p. 57; Norman 410; Roberts & Tomlinson, pp. 259-263; Wellcome 1333; for the author: DSB III, pp. 98-99; C. Klestinec, Theaters of anatomy: students, teachers, and traditions of dissection in renaissance Venice (2011). 17th-century sheepskin parchment, sewn at 4 stations, title in decorated border gold-tooled in 2nd of 5 spine compartments. With an engraved title page with the title in a large oval scrollwork cartouche surrounded by and incorporating dozens of skeletons and skulls of people and animals, 2 full-page engraved portraits (of the dedicatee Ranuccio I Farnese, Duke of Parma, and the author) and 34 full-page anatomical engravings on integral leaves, most containing multiple figures, numerous woodcut headpieces, tailpieces and other decorations, numerous woodcut decorated initials (at least 8 series) and cast fleurons. Set in roman types with incidental italic, Greek and Hebrew. Pages: [60], 191, [1 blank]; 126, [1], [1 blank] pp. including engraved title-page, 2 portraits, and illustrations.
