Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a first-hand account of the events and chaos of early 17th-century Naples, as experienced by the author. During 1647, Naples was in a time of unrest and turmoil fueled by hardship, poverty, and over-taxation. Alongside a cast of characters including aristocrats, churchmen, and revolutionaries, the work's central figure is Masaniello, an unlikely revolutionary. The author places the 1647 uprising within the long and complex history of Naples while providing vivid descriptions of daily life. This book offers a unique and engaging insight into an important moment in history, reflecting the tensions and hopes of the time and their relevance to societies today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Full leather hardback with gilt lettering down the spine. A few patches rubbed and worn but still showing well and holding firm. The red and black title-page is a little darkened and the lower right corner is chipped, slightly affecting the border and text; in addition the portrait frontispiece is missing; even so the contents are otherwise complete and very tidy, just age toned and tanned. Moreover, not from a library so no such stamps or labels. Neither are there any pen-marks or inscriptions, save the former owner's stamp and name at the endpaper: George H. Radford (very possibly the Liberal politician: Sir George Heynes Radford). Size: 8vo (143mm x 90mm); collation: pp. [6], 146. Thus a scarce book about the leader of the Nepalese revolt against Habsburg Spain, Masaniello, who died in 1647; and despite the title-page chip and lack of a frontispiece, still a very good copy indeed. Añadir al carritoLeather-bound. Condición: Fair. Full contemporary calf. Binding fair only, but internally clean. 16mo. vi, 146pp. Some evidence of centuries-old worm "tunnels" Masniello [Thommaso Anielo] was an Italian fisherman in Naples who led a revolt over an increase in taxes imposed by the ruling Spanish Viceroy. He led a mob of over 1,000 citizens and took over the City in this short lived seven-day uprising. Both parts of the history are contained in this volume and were originally published separately. A lot of old (mid-18th century) writing with ownership signatures of Hugh Jenkins, poems, doodles, etc. to endpapers; Mr. Jenkins apparently purchased the book already as an old book, for. he dated his notation of purchase place (Yarmouth). The populist uprising in Naples against the aristocracy was regarded as truly amazing: 'though it is a small volume, yet it contains as stupendous passages as ever happned on Earth since Discord first entered into the World.'.…
